Need help getting ftp to work :/
Hi there..
Im experiencing some problems with FTP on my readynas duo and I thought I would check here to see if anyone has any ideas..
The appartments where I live all get internet from the same company... Now the way it works (or should work) is like this:
Every appartment has a number "AAA" which in my case is 212...
On their network every appartment has an IP which is equal to 10.200.AAA.xxx...
Each appartment also has the following ports available:

Now as you can see, they forward all the ports to .5 on the network so naturally I connected my NAS to their network and gave it 10.200.212.5..
Afterwards I set up FTP to use port 20001 and 22123 to 22125 as passive ports... I set auth to "User" and Masqerade as to be my public IP..
I then restarted my readynas but I cant seem to get it working... Any ideas would be much appreciated :)
edit: oh and I have 2 users but no homeshares or anything

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserA couple of questions:
(a) what FTP client are you using? Is it set up to use 2AAA1 as the main port?
(b) By "public IP" do you mean 10.200.212.5, or the external IP address of the building (should be the latter)
(c) Are you testing FTP from inside your apartment or outside over the internet? - jwramAspirant

a) Using firefox and/or totalcommander
b) I mean external (http://www.whatsmyip.org/)... when trying to connect to it i use "externalip:22121"
c) Testing from inside my appartment - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOk. I use FileZilla myself as the client.
You need to test again over the internet (outside the apartment). The masquerade address gets in the way for local LAN connections. In addition, 22121 is probably not being forwarded to 21000, because you are not connecting externally.
If you need to use FTP inside the apartment as well as outside, I suggest using the FileZilla client. That particular client will work even if masquerading is off. (if the passive port IP address is private, FileZilla will ignore it by default, and use the external IP it sees in the TCP connection). Not sure if totalcommander does that trick, I haven't used it.
If you want to try that,
-set the NAS to use port 22123 as the main port, and 22124,22125 as passive ports
-turn masquerading off (use the local address / nas name for in that field).
-connect as externalip:22123
This assumes that despite the "passive ftp" comment in your port list, the apartment does not have a firewall that actually validates the protocols on the forwarded ports. - jwramAspirant

I allways use CIFS inside my appartment so that souldnt be a problem :) I just need to run FTP so my familiy etc. can reach my NAS... Ive been using remote readynas for it but the performance is a bit too slow for me :/.. Also the need of a program whenever I wanna access it is kinda anoying... Anywho.. The way I understand ur post the settings are correct if I wanna access outside my LAN so im gonna try that :) - jwramAspirantIt seems to be working :)
Now I just need to figure out how to make users see the media folder and not just their homefolder (i enabled that last night)
Thnx for your help :)
edit: Everything working now :) Thank you for taking the time to help.. Appreciate it :) - SlaskyAspirantJust shooting in here that if the users accessing the FTP server from the outside are using windows machines, they can simply put this in the address bar of a normal windows explorer window (not internet explorer): ftp://your.official.ip:yourFTPport and they will be prompted with a username and password.
This gives them access to the FTP server as a normal "disk" / viewed as normal folders. This enables them to upload and download without using a FTP client. - jwramAspirantyea i normaly add ftp servers as networks drives aswell for quick access :)
but thnx for the tip ;) does any of you by chance know any way I can stream from ftp instead of having to download the entire file ? - SlaskyAspirantI don't know if that is possible without any streaming-server doing the streaming itself. You could set the NAS up as a web-server by defining default share in frontview. But then you'd need direct links to the file, and so on and so forth.
This will also occupy one port of those few you have free. - jwramAspirantIt works with no problem on my linux pc when i simply access the ftp server with nautilus and doubleclicks the movie..
The player buffers for 3 secs and start playing :)
On windows though.. the only way Ive gotten it working is by using XMBC but even then its not running at smooth as I would like :(
edit: I found that if I use netdrive, I can make my FTP look like a partition and have everything working smoothly.. gr8 :D
