NV+ will not boot - LED flashes

i have a NV+ that has been in constant use since 12/07 and is certainly out of warranty.

Yesterday i had a power event (breakers were switched off and on a few times by someone who didnt know the nas was being powered by that source).

It came back up fine, but i figured there might be a disk issue (i had turned off all caching, but still...) so i logged in, selected the scan disk option, and rebooted.

it is now stuck at booting.

i removed the power, and restarted, the blue power light flashed many times quickly, then slowed down to a slower flash.  but its still stuck

All of the disk drive lights are on, andRAIDar sees it with status "system starting up" with all the drives with a green checkmark, and the correct ip address.

i cannot log in

the good news; this thing is near retirement age and it only used for backups, so no huge loss if its dead.

the bad news; i was hoping to use it for another several months while i get the replacement up and running (im having some issues with the new system)

any ideas what this is or how to fix?

thanks,

mark

    What firmware?

I would first try an OS reinstall using the boot menu.  If this fails to improve the situation, then power down, remove all disks, insert a spare disk if you have one, then factory default the unit.  This will assess the chassis integrity.

Before inserting the old disks, be sure to power down first, and insert them all in e correct slots.

      Hi markgca,

Before trying to reinitialize your unit, you may want to try to perform "Skip volume check". If this won't work, try to boot up the ReadyNAS without any drives (assuming all are labeled or marked) and see if it will be detected by the RAIDar utility or by your network.

      Hope this helps!

      Kind regards,

        Guide

i had tried the OS reinstall before i posted (mistakenly called it a firmware update)

i did remove the drives, inserted a single new drive, and did a factory default; and it works fine.

so there must be something up with the drive set

i guess the next step is to reinstall the disks and perform 'skip volume check'? i had started the default before i saw your post.

but at least now i know the hardware is good.

thanks for the help.  hopefully the unit will tell me which drive is bad

  • Try the skip volume check option.
If this doesn't help, power down, remove each disk and test with vendor tools.
Is it a flex raid volume?
