Password for Locked Hard Drives
Hi, The Readynas Pro I have has locked 6 of my hitachi hard drives with a password.
Can any one tell me how the Readynas generates it's password to lock it's drives? and how I could save my drives?
I get a message similar to this when put in a PC.
Auto-Detecting Sec Master: IDE Hard Disk:
Hard Disk locked, enter user password:
<Password forgotten, press enter to continue>
Hard Disk locked, enter master password:
(Hitachi support say "A: Unfortunately, there is no way to bypass the security password feature of Hitachi hard disk drives. If the password is not known or has been misplaced, Hitachi will not be able to assist in gaining access to the data on the drive.")

- Sunday_Afterno1AspirantI think you need to give some more information regarding the drive models you are using.
From what you write, it reads as if you have used drives that have full-disk encryption: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_encryption
If that is the case, then as you say, you need to know what the ReadyNAS does when asked for a password. This might require a call/email with support to help you out. - sphardy1ApprenticeMaybe this will help: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=28803
- jck_co_imAspirantHi, the drives used are the follwing (x 6 );
500GB Hitachi 0F11000 3.5in 25.4MM 32MB 7200RPM SATA ULTRA A7K2000 (HUA722050CLA330)
Looking at Hitachi's part numbers, hardware encrypted drives end with "1" (so HUA722050CLA331 would be the encrypted model equivalent of drive/s I'm using)
I think it can only be the Readynas that's locked the HDD. (I was going to use the Hitachi drive test tool while the NAS was down)
I've got a support case open, 15138711, and have had a pm message for a password to try.
Hopefully the NAS they came out of will unlock them, if it can be fixed. - Sunday_Afterno1AspirantThanks sphardy - I wasn't aware of that thread.

thanks, I shall try that also. I hope the hard drive/s doesn't lock you out pernamently after 3 attempts! (like ATM cards) - jck_co_imAspirantProblem solved by Jedi Knight. HDD utility used to unlock drives in a Pc workstation.
Thank you all - rivalcompAspirantI'm in the same situation with a Pro 4. Expansion interrupted due to power failure. The result: system can't boot, it says "Bad disk detected".
I put the problematic first HDD in a PC and figured out it has been locked by the NAS. I tried using MHDD (with ASCII codes above) and hdparm (with input redirected from .bin file above) to unlock it but with no result. MHDD says "Fail", hdparm says "Input/output error".
Is there any way to unlock this drive without data loss? Tried to connect it to a SATA addon card and onto the motherboard, result is the same. rivalcomp wrote: I'm in the same situation with a Pro 4. Expansion interrupted due to power failure. Please contact tech support as you stated that expansion got interrupted due to power failure.- rivalcompAspirant

It was not the storage's fault but UPS's. My main question is there any way to unlock this drive without data loss (redoing everything and put this drive as last expansion to unlock and erase it automatically)? I couldn't fix it with MHDD and hdparm because of the reasons I mentioned before. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
If one of the Jedi suggests contacting tech support, it is a good idea to follow their advice.rivalcomp wrote: Jedi Knight wrote: Please contact tech support as you stated that expansion got interrupted due to power failure.
