Pro Pioneeer suddenly racking up numerous ATA error counts on all drives (RNDP6000-V2)
Hello, my Pro Pioneer suddenly started issuing "Detected increasing ATA error count" messages. I first received one, removed the HDD to confirm the serial number, replaced the HDD (system now syncing) and have received about 200 messages for the various drives in the unit (all WD Red Pro NAS type).
Because I removed and replaced one of the drives, it is now syncing (@ 12% with 64 hours remaining). If it were not syncing, I not fear shutting it down temporarily.
Update: the errors kept streaming, so despite the sync in process, I shut down the NAS from the web browser.
I have the logs and am happy to upload logs if that is ok.
Looks like I'm unable to open a my.netgear support case for an NAS this old.

Actually, all ReadyNAS are now considered "end of life", so no Netgear support is available beyond warranty.
ATA errors are tricky. They are the only SMART error that may not actually be the fault of the drive. One bad drive can even "contaminate" the SATA subsystem and cause ATA errors on other channels.
Removing each drive (with power off, once the sync has completed) and testing each with Seatools is your best next step.

Hello -
I'm considering my old Pro Pioneer now too old and up for replacement. I'm a basic user with lots of work design files and big photos for backup storage. My redundant NAS is a RN316.
I'm wondering about replacing the Pro Pioneer with a Synology unit IF I can reuse the four WD181KFGX and two WD161KFGX "Red NAS" hard drives. I'm not a power user, and ease of setup for a home business non-IT person is key.
I'm wondering about a Synology DS1621+, but am just starting my search (my drives are not in their compatibility list, but the same model smaller-capacity ones are).
Thanks, Ralph

Hello again -
Question: how bad is it for the drives if I fire up the Pro Pioneer again to compare file backup to my other NAS before I retire the unit? It is my hope to re-use the existing HDD's in a new NAS. The ATA error count reached 2000 on the drives today during the time it was on. Any meaningful data comparison and transfer will likely take a few hours and the sync will not have time to finish before pursuing that Seatools test.
I'm considering two 6-bay replacements based upon compatibility with my existing WD161KFGX and WD181KFGX drives, and price, and your opinions are welcomed!

ATA errors themselves won't harm the drives. Of course, whatever is causing them could get worse and the NAS stop working. At the very least, whatever it is will likely slow things down.
