Readynas and Windows 8 issues
Hi everyone. In need of a little advice. I recently upgraded my Windows 7 machine to Win 8 and now when I look at "My Computer" I have not just the mapped network drive but also the Nas listed as a "Media Server". BUt I can only see my media through the mapped drive. There are folders on the Media Server but the are no files. I can't transfer files and the WD Live I have connected to the main tv sees it but again there are no files within the folders to play from it. If I re seach for the network on the WD I can find network dives and then the folders and then the files but can only scroll through them rather than conduct a title search as I did with Win 7. AND I have to reset next time I turn the WD on. I should mention that I've just upgraded from a NV+ to an Ultra 6 Plus and simply copied the setup settings from one to the other but I don't get why I cant put media on the Server. Any and all help appreciated. Cheers :?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAre you saying this is new behavior (that it worked differently with Windows 7)???
I don't see how the WD Live issue can be linked to the Windows 8 upgrade - I am thinking something else has changed. Did you perhaps upgrade your NAS firmware recently? Is it set to autoupdate? - AndrewL1963AspirantYep! Setup the new ultra about 3 weeks ago. it tool the place of the NV+ with no issues. Mapped it as a new drive and everything functioned without a hitch exactly as it had. Installed WIn 8 a week ago and have had these "issues" since.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI am wondering if the ultra perhaps upgraded itself to 4.1.22 at about the same time. You might check your logs to see if that happened.
The "MediaServer" stuff is using ReadyDLNA, and there are some issues that have been reported with that in with the newest firmware.
BTW, the WD Live doesn't have to use ReadyDLNA, it can also access the NAS using CIFS (similar to your mapped drive). - AndrewL1963AspirantJust checked. Ultra running 4.2.22. I'm assuming the issues are Win 8 related as that's when the problems arose. But stranger things do happen. So are you suggesting I should try turning off the ReadyDLNA?

What is broken is DLNA playback, so turning ReadyDLNA off will not fix anything.AndrewL1963 wrote: Just checked. Ultra running 4.2.22. Is "Download updates automatically" checked? If so you might try is downgrading to 4.2.21 (and turning off the automatic download). - kossbossGuideThere are new protocols involved with Windows 8, I believe one of two things need to happen for everything to work right. Windows 8 needs to comeout with updates to be backward compatible and also REadynas next update needs to include Windows 8 fixes. For one Windows uses a new SMB protocol version 2.2 so CIFS/SMB also has problems with it. As far as for DLNA a work around can be to Map the NAS on the PC and setup the windows 8 server as a media server instead of the NAS (I use Emit and it works awesome). I understand of the bottleneck issue but if you have a gigabit connection to the NAS it should hurt because either wawy your bottled down by the LAN speeds.
READNYAS--gigabit link---SWITCH----gigabitlink---windows 8
Media share ----------mapped to drive M:------------>windows 8
Then on windows 8 set it up as a media server using various 3rd party software
I use plex or emit
Both work wonders - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe puzzle here is that he shouldn't need a DLNA workaround because his WD player is not affected by the Windows 8 upgrade. That is why I suggested downgrading to 4.2.21.
Also, his only issue with Windows 8 was with DLNA, since he was accessing the NAS as a media server. I agree it would be easier to simply access the NAS using CIFS. That might work fine (note one other recent poster having issues with Windows 8 CIFS found his problem was with jumbo frames, now with windows 8 itself). - AndrewL1963AspirantInterestingly enough I downgraded the to 4.2.21 as you suggested StephenB and this has rectified the issue. All media is now visible inside the Mediaserver and once again I am allowed to do a search. So for now I'm happy. Thanks for all the advice.
