ReadyNas Duo - Freezes / Hangup
I have two ReadyNas Duo's. The one causing the problems I have had for a couple of years with no issues.
Last week I noticed the Nas was hung up because I was unable to load a movie.
When using the Raidar you can search for the NAS but you can not browse or go to Setup.
I remember getting an update link so I rebooted the NAS (which could only be done by unplugging the power) and upgraded the firmware.
I also ran all the tests and found no errors.
I thought that was the end of that but a couple days later the NAS is hungup again.
I did some search on the forum and I didnt find any solutions and most posts where from 2009 so I figured I would give it a shot and ask.
Whats causing the hangup and how can I fix it?
Again, this has been working for a couple of years and my second Duo which is setup identically is not having any issues.
Thank you in advance.

- DrC000AspirantActually I think what I'll do initially is remove the Seagate and run the NAS unmirrored for a few weeks to see if the lockups go away. I don't want to spend another 50 quids on a new drive then have to replace the ReadyNAS too.
Since I've already had a Seagate fail this year it's likely that the other one is going too; although I'm a bit surprised the Seagate drives have failed so quickly....it's not like the NAS gets hammered since it's mainly only used for backup. 3 years to failure with such light use is very poor. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
It has been spinning 24/7 though, correct?DrC000 wrote: ...Since I've already had a Seagate fail this year it's likely that the other one is going too; although I'm a bit surprised the Seagate drives have failed so quickly....it's not like the NAS gets hammered since it's mainly only used for backup. 3 years to failure with such light use is very poor.
Generally I plan on 3 year drive life, though of course I like it when they run longer. - DrC000AspirantActually the NAS spends quite a bit of time powered down...probably 50% of the last 3 years it's been powered off. Also I've got power saving setup so the disks should spin down when I'm not accessing the NAS. If I decide to replace the drive I don't think I'll be buying another Seagate.
If it is the drive, I'm still a bit puzzled why the NAS would lockup though....I thought the whole point of a RAID setup like this was that drive failures can be dealt with gracefully. Do you think that it's less stable because it's a consumer level product rather than something indented for business use? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYour drive SMART stats say 18547 hours power on - which is 2 years not three. So I agree it is a little early.
When disk I/O fails, bad stuff happens. It's supposed to be graceful, but sometimes isn't - especially when ATA commands error out.
Anyway, back up the data while you are waiting for a replacement drive. - DrC000AspirantQuick update for anyone else searching this forum with a similar problem. Pulling the suspect Seagate drive stopped the lockups, so it looked like a good candidate for being the culprit.
Although the lockups have stopped, I am still having problems....activating any usb backup via the front button no longer works, although kicking off the same backup job from FrontView seems to work OK(ish). Not sure if this is because I've only got one disk in slot 2 and a binking error light for the now empty disk one.
Looking deep into the logs I also found an error message about failing flash memory that requires me to contact Netgear support. The first occurrence of this error was around the time of my first NAS lockup....which probably isn't coincidental.
I'm not sure whether to persist with trying to get the thing to behave or if I should just give up and buy a new (non Netgear) NAS?! I've read good things about Synology gear, anyone have any good/bad experience with them?
