ReadyNAS Duo drops off LAN
Hi,
I'm new to this forum because I've never had a problem with my Duo until now. Hopefully someone can help.
I recently moved house and when starting my Duo up for the first time, I was unable to access shares, frontview or ping my ReadyNAS.
After a few reboots, I eventually figured out that if I took out my second disk (1.5Tb West Digital Identical to drive 1) the NAS booted and functioned as normal. I sent this disk off to Western Digital under warranty and they recently sent it back.
Despite having replaced the disk, I am now experiencing exactly the same issue. I can access Frontview with one disk installed and when I plug in the second disk I get the expected message's below (not exact)
Event: Disk add detected
Event: Volume resync started at 00:00 .........
Shortly after the resync starts, the Duo drops completely off the network. No respond to ping and no access to Frontview. Raidar fails to see it too. The only way I can get it to boot is to drop the power, remove the second disk and power back up.
I am getting really frustrated now and not to mention nervous due to the amount of data I stand to loose if the only working disk fails.
Please help!
Lee

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe first step is to back up your data! RAID doesn't guarantee data loss - lots of posts on this topic in the forums.
The second step is to test the second disk in your PC with vendor tools (WD lifeguard in this case).
If your disks are on Netgear's HCL, then you could also open an on-line support case. - ScaevolaAspirantHmmm..
I have nv+, but the re-sync does cause a significant overhead (in my experience) performance wise. Do you have the stock memory in there or have you upgraded it? I could see the machine loosing connection with the network (ie not accessible via browser or raiDar, did you try to just let it run?
Also are you making use of jumbo frames? What is your ip acquisition strategy? (static, dhcp, dhcp reservation, etc)? - DPIPIMHouseAspirantOk guys,
Sorry for the delayed communication, things are pretty hectic at the mo. I appreciate the responses so far but I'm afraid things are going from bad, to worse.
It turns out that my disks aren't on the HCL. For some reason, Netgear supports both the 2Tb and 1Tb versions of my disk but not the 1.5Tb :-( However, these disks have been running perfectly until I moved house. Roughly 15months......
The problem has now escalated to a blue flashing Power LED, no disk lights and the Raidar status "Bad disks detected". I only have my single "good" disk installed. (Disk1)
The NAS is returning a ping on the address which I assigned to it but I cannot access it in FrontView no browse to the shares. Disk 1 is still my original data disk and disk 2 was the one sent for repair to WesDig. I have since formatted Disk 2 in the hope that it would re-sync when re-installed.
I have also, this morning, tried an OS Re-install but I don't think this has worked because all of my IP settings are still the same.
"OS reinstall. Reinstalls the firmware from the system’s internal flash to its disks. Use the OS reinstall boot mode when the system crashes and corrupts some configuration files. OS reinstall boot mode also resets some settings on your system, such as Internet protocol settings and the administrator password, to defaults."
I understand that my disks aren't on the HCL and I'm kicking myself that I didn't check. Any help would be appreciated even if it is merely advice on how to retrieve my data off my only working disk (if still working).
I was unable to backup my data before this happened.
Thanks again. - DPIPIMHouseAspirantAll data lost. My own fault
Ended up formatting disks and started from scratch.
I have some data backed up but I'm still gutted.
If anyone experiences the same issue, here's my advice........- Remove both the defective and the good drive.
Check/Replace the defective drive.
Perform a Factory reset with just the replaced/blank drive in the Duo.
Plug in the good drive containing old data into the USB port.
Copy Data back to device.
After copy and check, remove the USB disk and format it.
Place newly formatted disk into second bay to go fully redundant again.
Fixed. - PapaBear1ApprenticeMy condolences on joining the lost data club. I joined decades ago. Now you know why we beat the drum about maintaining a current and complete backup and to never ever trust your data to a single device, be it a single hard drive or an NAS. I would recommend that you get not one, but two external drives. When you back up to the first it is father. When you back up to the second a period of time later, that becomes father and the first one is grandfather. The period of time depends on how often your data changes.
Even though I have two NAS units, one backing up the other via rsync, I still have two WD passports which I use to maintain a backups of my critical financial and personal data. Father is always stored in my SD box at the bank, just in case of a disaster at my home. I used to use my desk at work until I retired. Before I got my second NAS, I updated my backup weekly, but now I only update the USB drive on a monthly basis.
But you must decide on your own schedule and how many USB drives you need to maintain a comfort level. BTW, my backups on the WD drive are FAT32, so I can read them on a Windows PC, they are my disaster recovery plan after all. - DPIPIMHouseAspirantThanks for the advice. I will set up some sort of backup plan for sure.
