ReadyNAS DUO power loss and now green blinking lights

Hi All,

I just experienced a power failure and the ReadyNAS DUO went down unexpectedly. When the power came back on the NAS was manually powered on by me. As the NAS powered up the blue power light never comes on and the 1 and 2 lights are now blinking green.

The device was accesible moments before the power failure but not sure on the blinking green lights. Both 1 and 2 are flashing alternating green and there is no blue power indicator light and the device is not accesible/discoverable on the network. The fan is also on high and has not slowed down?

I have not performed any soft/hard reset at all and the NAS has been powered on for several hours now in this state. I am unclear as to whether the drives are syncing or they are both failing? Please let me know what steps I can take to either recover the NAS and/or data?

Thanks

  • Any other way to recover the data from the drives if I am unable to get to the boot menu?

Any other ideas Ivan try? Even with the two drives removed I cannot not get the unit to do anything other than blink green on the drives. Puzzled
  • I thought you wouldn't be able to from the symptoms you described.
If you have access to another duo you could try inserting the disks into that unit.
If you don't have backup then you would probably be best advised to take a disk out and try to get your data off it using Linux reader. http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/

You'll need to use disk 1 for this if you have a Duo v1, disk 2 data partition is not readable on the Duo v1.

I have seen some suggestions when a unit is unresponsive like this to change the memory, although of course you may be wasting your time and money.

I don't suggest changing the memory at this point. The duo v1 is fussy about its memory; you are likely to compound the problem. There is a guide to the LED patterns here: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=324 Are you seeing any of those patterns?

After you pull your data off the unit with linux-reader, delete the drive partitions with Windows disk manager (which you get to by right-clicking computer and selecting "manage").

Then reinstall that drive into the duo (powered down) and remove drive 2. Then start the duo, and see if it does a normal install. The theory here is that if the duo is bricked, this does no harm, and if it is not you can rebuild the disks from the backup.
  • I will try to work on getting to the data today using the Linux-reader software. Hoping that the drives should still be fine.

The only LED's that flash on the unit are disk 1 and 2 flash slowly. No pattern and no power light at all and the fan is on high. If both disks are removed the unit dies the same thing when booted.

Possible hardware issue with the unit? Never boots up and no power light with fan on high.

I think it is likely hardware. It could be that the power brick is damaged, or the system board, or (as vandermerwe suggests) the memory.

Though I think the procedure above is worth a shot - it costs you nothing to try it. Replacing the duo's power brick (if you can find a compatible one on-line) might also be worth a try. Going beyond that doesn't seem cost-effective to me - I'd just replace the NAS. An RN102 costs about $200 US and would be much faster than the duo v1 (and supports 3 and 4 TB drives).
  • My first step is to make sure I can get to my data and recover it using the suggested method.....once I can get that recovered I can breathe easy and look into a new NAS. As mentioned, this is a V1 Duo and I recall paying over $400 for it when I bought it. So, at least a newer version replacement is cheaper now...and faster.

Will report back if I can get to the data....thanks for the suggestions
  • Data is backing up nicely using that nice little Linux utility for Windows. Wheeew ;)

The drives seem fine. To bad this looks more and more like a hardware failure.

What recommendations can you all give for a replacement model? 1 TB drives is plenty for my home use. I dont have another DUO to use so thinking I will go out and purchase a barnd new model to reconfigure and backup data again.

If a duo v1 meets your needs now, then he place to start [within the Netgear family] is the RN102. At the moment you can get for about $200 in the US. It has pretty much the full capabilities of the duo, plus additional features (antivirus protection for instance). And it is a lot faster than the duo. The only issue is that the OS6 platform is still rough around the edges.

An ultra-2 or pro-2 is worth considering if you can find them at a good price. They are not going-forward platforms. But their features and UI are already very familiar to you, and they will outperform the RN102. None of the new OS6 features though.

Avoid the duo v2, as it is end-of-life and has no benefits over the RN102 - only drawbacks. It also is very different from the duo v1.
  • "...both 1 and 2 are blinking green and alternating slowly..." - definitely memory error.

    Why am I so sure?

I just tried to replace the original 256 Mb memory with a spare 512Mb SODIMM DDR memory, got the same "disk leds alternate blinking" result (and NAS refusing to start), switched back to original memory - everything working again. The scenario was then reproduced with the same result.
