ReadyNas Duo USB Share - Write-Protected
Hi All,
I am looking for some help. I have a Netgear ReadyNas NV+ running perfectly. I also have a Netgear ReadyNas Duo running perfectly. I have a Western Digital 2TB USB drive which I have plugged into the Duo and it sees it perfectly and I can format it to whichever file system I see fit. My problems then start. I am unable to write to the USB drive even though I can see it in Windows & Mac operating systems.
The ReadyNas shows up the correct size of the USB volume, the name of the share is correct but I cannot write to it. The odd thing is that when I first formatted it to Ext3 (I have also tried NTFS & FAT) was that I was able to transfer a large set of files onto it. I am now unable to add anything else onto it.
I have the following permissions enabled.
CIFS - Read/Write Enabled with 'Allow guest access' ticked
AFP - Read/Write Enabled with 'Allow guest access' ticked
HTTP/S - Read/Write Enabled
In Advanced options I am unable to change the share folder owner and group to anything other than root. I am not sure if this is the issue or not but I had the same symptom on FAT & NTFS.I have 'Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files' ticked.
I have exhausted most online searches and forums with this query so this is why I am posting it. I hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction as it is much better for me to have the USB drive plugged into my NAS.
Thanks in advance

- B52hbuffAspirantWe may be running into a similar problem.

My recommendation is that you unplug the usb drive from the duo, plug the drive in again, then verify you can write to the usb drive. In windows, navigate to \\nasname\USB_HDDn\... and copy a file there. If you can write to it, then start your backup.
So I think I'm at a point where this workaround 'works' for me... curious to see if it 'works' for you. Then maybe we could figure out a better solution, or more troubleshooting. - kennethmacleodAspirantHi,
Funny you should mention that as last night I disconnected the drive and reconnected and was able to copy and delete form the drive. I then read your post but I though I would hold back from replying until I left the drive on longer. Sure enough this morning the Write-Protected issue was back and disconnecting the drive and reconnecting resolves the issue but only temporarily. I could really do with a permanent fix rather than having to do this every time I need to copy something to the drive.
Now in my NAS share i see an admin folder, a c folder and a home folder. Any idea how to get rid of these as they just appear like clutter if nothing else. - B52hbuffAspirantOk, I wasn't advertising this as a permanent fix, but at least we know the two issues are similar.
Does your external drive have any settings to disable the power management? Mine doesn't...
I'm hoping Netgear can address the issue with a firmware upgrade... - kennethmacleodAspirantHi,
Many thanks for posting it as I may not have accidentally stumbled upon that last night. My HD does not have any way to control power management either. I will check mime out tonight and see if it is when the drive goes into power saving that the write protected issue begins. I will keep you posted. - kennethmacleodAspirantJust checked and the drive is fine when plugged in and the issue arises when the USB HD goes into power save mode. I can read fine from the disk afterwards and copy form it but I cannot write anything to it until I unmount the drive and then reconnect it.

This exact same problem has happened to me. I spent quite some time on the phone to Tech Suppport and they couldn't offer a solution. Their only suggestion was that maybe I had a virus which didn't make a lot of sense to me. Anyway I did a full scan with the latest definitions but as I thought, everything was clear.
Weird thing is, the folders only show when going thorugh Windows Explorer. If I browse through RAIDar, the extra folders do not show.
I have deleted all except the folder "c". But "admin" and "home" still appear in Windows Explorer. Even though they appear in WE, they can't be opened and I get an error message saying they can not be accessed. I have tried every possible combination of file access privilages. I have rebooted the computer and powered off the NAS. No luck.
Also I can no longer access the backup share even though it shows in both Windows and RAIDar. Tech Support suggested I try setting up a test folder. Which I did. I then deleted it but it still shows in WE. And yes, I can't access it.
I am using Windows 7 and I am the sole user of the NAS. It is cabled to the computer via a switch.
Any suggestions would be most helpfull.
Thanks in advance. - B52hbuffAspirantI am local to Netgear. I'll volunteer to drive my NAS, or my external USB drive or both over to the local lab and help demonstrate the problem. Someone from Infrant/Netgear can PM me and we can arrange for a debugging session. :)
- ewokNETGEAR ExpertHmm, we might need to acquire one of these drives for testing...

Please, please, please. In my case the WD product is compelling because it is one of the few large USB RAID-capable enclosures.
...but if you want to save $$$, I'll drive mine over and we can do lunch. My treat. :) - kennethmacleodAspirantAnyone had any further joy with this? The only workaround seems to be to disconnect the drive, reconnect it then transfer the files you want instantly
