ReadyNAS Duo V1 ADD TO

My current unit is at max. drive capacity ie, 2x2TB. Can and how should I add an additional identical unit, to facilitate the dedication of this additional unit to media, and the original to backup of system and data . This would transfer the media files from the established unit, thereby reducing the current load in that area. Possible ?

  • I think you are asking whether you can get another NAS and put some of your existing data onto it.
Of course, although I would not get an identical unit. The duo v1 is now old and, relatively speaking, slow.
    You need to consider:

How much data you'll accumulate in the next few years.
Whether you'll need the unit just as a storage server or whether you'll be streaming or transcoding.
How you will backup your data.

I would look at the new Readynas range, plenty of info around.

I agree that you should consider the current ReadyNAS products first. I'm not sure you could even find a new duo v1 - it has been out of production for several years now.

If your storage needs are growing, consider a 4 slot unit, and leave some slots empty. The cheapest way to expand storage is to add a new disk into an empty slot.
  • Happy Birthday, your joining date, my birthday.Thank you your prompt response. I currently have 400GB stored in media. I have 2x750GB HDD from my existing NAS, idle , hardly used from a known source. I can purchase a further unit to put these into, if it would be possible to function. I do accept that money being available then the way forward would be to upgrade the unit, but unfortunately that is not the case.
  • Hallo Stephen, thanks for the input, have explained to your SA compatriot my situation, and have checked current availability of duo v1. Thought running twin units would help, if possible. Your previous assistance proved invaluable, much appreciated.

Hey, your join date is my mom's birthday.

Available funds is usually an issue :) Twin units can help, I wasn't meaning to dismiss that idea.

If you just want to add a newer 2-bay unit with similar features (and better performance), you should look at the RN102. You can find used equipment, but of course you are taking chances there. A used NV+ v1 would take your older 750GB disks w/o data loss (assuming they were from the duo).
  • My thoughts were to twin the units up, use one unit for system and data backup, the other unit storing the media content. The backup is fullyautomated, so I would assume that I would nominate the additional NAS for the media folders only, leaving the original to cater for the existing. Is that how it would function ? I would format the 750GB HDD's prior to setting up.

You could set it up that way with no problem. The units would operate completely independently once you migrate the media content. You'd simply access the new nas for media instead of the old.

Migrating your existing media content could be easily done with a frontview backup job.

How do you access your media? Do you use ReadyDLNA, or something else.
  • Sounds good to me, although, as per your reccom. I am looking at a RN102. i
  • If I went the RN102 route, would that cause problems with the setup of twinning.I do find the Frontview a trifle disconcerting. I access my media either through the desktop, for editing cropping and titling, I am also linked via a EVA9100 to my TV. The migration using the Frontview is a winner. Thanks again
    will count the pennies.

The RN102 and the duo v1 can coexist on the same network without problems. You can also migrate your data over the network between the two devices.

There should be no issues with the EVA9100, or with access from your PC.
