ReadyNAS FTP timeout

Hi Guys

I've done searches through the forum for a solution to this but am still having trouble.

I have a ReadyNAS Duo V2, Firmware is 5.3.5.

I have a share that I want to allow access to via FTP. The information is sensitive so want to create a secure connection - FTPES.
I have allowed the FTP service on the NAS, configured the Authentication to User, changed the passive ports to custom ones in a range of 50 (7200-7500) I've allowed the Masquerade and set it as the external IP.
I have also set the share to allow FTP access and the user has permission

I have a netgear router that I have set up on our BT internet connection.
I have set the firewall to forward FTP(20,21) to the local IP of the NAS drive.
I have also created the rules for the custom ports 7200-7250 to be allowed and forwarded to local IP of the NAS drive.

I am using Filezilla to connect to the FTP site using FTPES and a user name and password
Filezilla displays the Share route, when I click on the share to display the contents, this is what happens:

Command: MLSD
Response: 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for MLSD
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

I have checked the MTU on the router and that is 1492.
I cannot find the setting on this firmware to disable Jumbo Frames, so not sure what this setting currently is.

I have also tried changing the FTP port to 7150 and forwarding that through the firewall - which didn't work

I am stuck now and cannot think of anything else, so I'm hoping you can help me out.

Thank you

The v2 doesn't do jumbo frames - that is why there is no setting for it.

If you are pnly using FileZilla you don't need to use the masquerade (it will detect the private address, and will then switch to the source IP address in the incoming packets).

Have you tried connecting on the local LAN?

As a test, try using ordinary FTP to connect instead of FTPES. If that works, then the firewall is not the issue. Maybe also try using your admin login - as that might help rule out a permissions problem.
  • I have tried without the masquerade and it won't even connect. With the masquerade configured, at least Filezilla will connect but doesn't list the directory.

Local LAN in fine, connection works and transfers.

I have also now tried with FTP. I still cannot get the directory to list but a colleague can. With FTPeS he cannot.

    Any suggestions?

I have heard that another port needs to be forwarded from the router for FTPES to work

FileZilla doesn't need the masquerade with my Pro - check your setting for passive mode in FileZilla (edit->settings Connection\ftp\passive mode) which should be "Use the server's external IP address instead".

Just to be clear, by FTPeS do you mean FileZilla's "require explicit FTP over TLS" encryption mode of FTP? If so, it does not require any additional ports to be forwarded (compared with normal FTP). SFTP does not work with my Pro.
