ReadyNAS NV+ -failure
Hi all,
I am hoping for some answers/help here. I have a ReadyNAS NV+, model number on the back says RND4000-100 v3. Up until a couple weeks ago it's been a faithful and amazing machine. I had it on a time schedule for auto on/off and one morning it just didn't come on. No bad smells (fried electronics), hooked to a surge protector, etc.
Pushing the power button did nothing. No sounds, no lights flickering, nothing.
From reading these forums I assumed it was a bad PSU. I tried to secure one through Netgear, but no luck. I found one on eBay that I probably paid too much for (after more reading), replaced it, and now the fan comes on and the hard drive lights flash briefly, but that's it. The LCD screen remains dark and it doesn't sound like anything else is happening.
In my panic to preserve my data I tried a couple different programs that claimed to be able to read the NAS' file system. I purchased one of them - RTools for Windows. From drive 1 it recovered the folder I wanted, but only maybe a quarter of it in size. Most of the sub folders are empty. I assume that this is because it was a 4 drive system and the data is spread out? This is turning out to be a crash course in NASs for me.
I'm having a lot of mixed results, and to be honest I don't actually know what I'm doing. It seems prudent to ask for advice here before I actually screw something up.
Ideally there would be a way to simply revive the NAS itself of course. If not, I guess I'm looking for the full spectrum of advice here. I have a MacBook and a Windows laptop in the house to troubleshoot with.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming you bought a supply specifically for a ReadyNAS. The NAS supply has a part number from the manufacturer, but the connector is wired differently than the standard one.
It sounds like your power supply died and took a hostage with it. It's been too long since I used an NV+ to remember if anything normally comes up on the display if the volume is corrupt, but I want to say it does. Can you see the NAS in RAIDar? I know it comes up there even with no drives (which is another thing to try).
Yes, you are going to have to mount at least 3 drives simultaneously (all 4 if you weren't using RAID) on the recovery system if you want to recover all of the data.

I was unable to find an OEM one and purchased one like this one:
It may not be correct then, per the other post as well. Perhaps before I do anything else I'll try to adapt a regular PSU to the NAS.
RAIDAR doesn't see it.
How would one go about mounting all 4 drives at once? This is the very murky place for me.

Hi there,
As you indicated dead PSU's are fairly common on these. I'm on #3. Honestly it will be my last.
Anyway, it sounds like the PSU you bought is not correct. Have a look at this thread:
There is good info regarding adapting other PSU's to the NV+
I wouldn't futz around too much with the file systems on the individualy drives until you have exhausted all other avenues. Being some sort of RAID instantiation, files are spread across all the drives in a supposedly redundant manner. I don't understand it so can't explain it..
If you have no backup of your data, you might want to look at a used empty drive box off of E-Bay. Once your data is in hand, seek a replacement.

Thank you - I bought one like this, but perhaps it isn't quite right:
Even though it's pitched as a plug-in replacement. I will look at this other thread and maybe pickup another power supply unit. What can it hurt at this point?
I do have a backup, but I was a dummy and used Hubic for it. Great and cheap, but downloading all of it will take - I don't know, months? Plus there's a few recent items of my 1 year old and such that won't have been uploaded yet. It's really "funny" in that I found myself thinking that after all this time I should probably think about replacing the NAS and boom....

That one should be wired correctly, so that's not it unless you just happened to get a bad one.
