ReadyNAS NV+ v2 won't work with WD HDD's
Hi all,
Here's the situation...
Bought a new ReadyNAS NV+ v2 with latest firmware installed 5.3.7
Installed 2 x WD HDD's 1TB each WD10EZRX
First boot-up everything went fine and was using the NAS last night.
when I came in this morning the NAS had crashed. I had to pull the power plug to reboot. This is where the fun started.
I have tried everything. Tried WD Lifeguard Write Zeros, tried deleting partition/creating/formatting/not-formatting. Tried diskpart 'clean' - at this stage i'm out of ideas
The HDD's will run through Factory Reset no problem and go as far as choosing which RAID set-up I want in RAIDar. After this stage the errors start, some of which:
Raid Creation Failed
I have tried different RAID configurations, tried 1 HDD at a time etc. I am totally out of ideas.
The strange thing is that when I install an old Seagate 160GB HDD, it works flawlessly! (Didn't have time to check if it crashes after a few hours)
Are these HDD's simply not compatible with this NAS? Seems strange, because it worked for a few hours last night

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIs the Seagate you are replacing also a 1 TB model? Also, I am wondering if all 4 drives in a single XRAID-2 array, or if they are organized differently.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredRAIDar should indicate the progress. Can you try installing that on your PC, running it and hovering your mouse over the volume LED?
- ianrenAspirantThank you for your replies. Seagate drive is ST3750330AS - 750GB. I haven't tried replacing the other of the pair in CH2 yet as my priority was to swap out the failing Seagate drive first, in CH1.
I have RAIDar installed but that reports nothng different i.e. Volume C: Not Redundant, and overall capacity of the NAS. Hovering over the CH1 LED ID just confirms the drive model no., capacity of 931GB and temp. status 28C/82F.
Apart from confirmation of successful backup jobs overnight, nothing more has been reported in the log since this replacement disk was inserted.
Prior to the change, the config was
CH1 ST3750330AS - 750GB
CH2 ST3750330AS - 750GB
CH3 WD20EARX - 2TB
CH4 WD20EARX - 2TB
This has worked faultessly until CH1 began reporting numerous reallocated sector counts, and I decided that it should be replaced. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you don't have a current backup, it would be a good time to make one (since your volume is not redundant, there is a higher risk of loss than usual).
Are there any hints in the log files? Also, have you submitted a support request? - ianrenAspirantThanks Stephen. Yep, have always kept a backup wich runs every night!! Too much valuable data!!
There doesn't appear to be anything adverse in the logs, but as a relative novice at this, probably don't understand all that's reported anyway.
I haven't submitted a report request as yet. That was next on the agenda, but thought I'd enquire in the forum first. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI'd expect to see some log entries when the disk insertion was detected, and some progress indicators from there.
I've never been clear on what is supposed to happen when you insert a third [intermediate] disk size with XRAID2 - all the netgear info I've seen sticks with 2 sizes, and the forum posts are mixed. Conceptually it would be tricky, I am not sure how the NAS could create an upper layer for the extra 250 GB, since it would have to split the existing upper layer on the 2 TB drives. Though at the very least, it should rebuild the 750 gb base layer reasonably quickly.
You could test the drive in a PC using WDC Lifeguard, and make sure it is ok. - BlueLotusAspirantI have also bought a new ReadyNAS NV, but after reading your experience I have also bought WD RED WD10EFRX. I have installed it, it is not showing any errors at present. I want to know whether I can attach a tape drive to ReadyNAS?
NB: I have read somewhere ReadyNAS does not support JBOD, is that right?
Thanks - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I believe the answer to that is "no". Though you can probably attach a drive to a PC, and back up the shares over the network. This is not something I've attempted.BlueLotus wrote: I want to know whether I can attach a tape drive to ReadyNAS?
You can create RAID-0 volumes for each drive, which amounts to the same thing. The v2 documentation calls this JBOD (http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... 3Jul12.pdf).BlueLotus wrote: I have read somewhere ReadyNAS does not support JBOD, is that right?
You need to use FlexRAID to get this mode however, which on the older products requires a factory reset/restore from backup. This is described in the manual link above.
