READYNAS RN104 ADMIN ACCOUNT LOCKOUT

I performed an upgrade on my ReadyNas 10400 to the latest version (firmware v6.8.0). I then logged into the admin page and tried to reset the default admin group name account name to a different name other than admin...big whoops.  Not realizing that what I was really changing was the admin group.  That locked out the system. I had already setup a password recovery and of course that did not work.  I then did a OS reinstall to reset admin password and I then added an admin group since i wasn't able to change the admin group I had renamed earlier.  Well that completely locked me out.  Now even with an OS reinstall I can't log into the admin account.  I'm to the point where I'm going to have to do a factory reset. Any suggestions?  As of right now I'm thinking in buying a new drive and doing a factory reset on that drive then installing my old drive.  Now the question will this work? Where in memory is my password stored? Bios or Harddrive?  Any other suggestions?

  • Sorry about this bug. We seem to have missed this in testing. You should not be able to change the admin group name.  The system relies on a group called admin to work properly. 

    If you're having a problem caused by changing the admin group name in 6.8, please PM me and I can walk you through getting it fixed. We'll fix it in an upcoming release.

    Everything is stored on the drives.  The flash only serves to bnoot the OS on the drives or, in the absence of one, install it.  Doing a factory reset with another drive accomplishes nothing.  In fact, factory default will be what you get automatically with a new drive alone.   When you put in the old drive instead, all your old (corrupt) settings will still be there.

     

    I assume you have been mucking with the admin group and user via SSH, as the GUI prevents you from doing that.  And for good reason, they should never be changed.  In fact, no user or group accounts should be touched outside the GUI or ReadyCloud.  There are also ReadyNAS-specific databases associated with the GUI and a conflict with standard Linux accounts can result in where you find yourself.

     

    I believe you are right and there is nothing to do but a factory default.

     

    When you say you have "no access", do you mean to the data as well as the admin interface?  If so, are you looking for a way to recover the data that's on the drive(s)?  If so, give more details about the number of drives and RAID configuration (if it's not just one, as you have indicated) and perhaps we can at least help you with that.

      I have this exact same issue - logged in after doing some upgrades to other network equipment (no changes of any kind to the NAS) but always had a little OCD that when I tried to change permissions on my shares, I had both an admin user, and an admin group.  Using the GUI (ssh isn't enabled on my NAS).  After changing, it immediately disconnected me from the NAS, and asked me for a password.  I know the password, and using it on either admin or admins did nothing.  Is there a solution?

        It does appear that after changing the permission of the share you will lose access and you will need to login using the new user credentials. However in your case you are having trouble logging in the password is not working, is this correct? If so, you could try to delete the cache of the computer then try to login again or reboot the computer then try to access the shares again.

      Well, I just made the same mistake - using the latest up-to-date version and the web interface!

      Why I did it? No user should have the same name like a group. Groups should be plural. And as I did not change the ID of the group, renaming should be either possible or prevented by the GUI.

      I had tried accessing \\IPaddr and only always saw the Admin empty folder in there but I added the "\data " and can see all the shares in there - Fantastic : I am making a local copy, I no longer  trust the NAS to keep my data there and consider it safe. Thanks for the suggestion - God bless :) !!!

      BTW,  @moderator, thanks so much for fixing my renamed Admin account but I have a question/ I can now see two admin Groups in there: One is Admin GUID 102 and the other is admin GUID 98. Which of those is the real sacred admin group that should not be touched? Thanks again.
