ReadyNAS Ultra 2 v4.2.19 - Hitachi Deskstar 4TB Support

I wonder if anybody else has tried the Hitachi Deskstar 4TB Internal drive in the ReadyNAS Ultra 2 with Firmware v4.2.19. I know it's not on the 'supported listed' as of today. When I insert the drive in the device it shows the following

Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, Single disk
Status: Unprotected. A disk failure will render this volume dead.
RAID Disks:

Ch 1 : Hitachi HDS5C4040ALE630 [3726 GB]
1673 GB allocated

Only 2TB of the 4TB being available. I'm wondering if there is some sort of trick on the ReadyNAS to get it to show all 4GB (3.2gb i know). Is it because it's only a single drive so it's saving half the drive? Or is it because simply the fact that the ReadyNAS doesn't support the drive?

Thank you for your time

I believe it's because the drive came out well after the firmware release. So my thoughts would be that the firmware limitations cause the issue. Let's hope that they have already considered this and are working on 4.2.20 full release to support these drives. That would increase the capacity of a ReadyNAS 4200 immensely. I want to give you kudos for trying the drive even though it's not on the list; yet.
  • you should try either a factory default from frontview or the boot menu, the seagate 4tb drives work fine for me, I would expect the hitachi's to work the same.
  • TeknoJnky,

The Factory Default did in fact work! Thanks! I guess I'll go buy a second drive now. :)

Here is what it shows now

    RAID Configuration
Configuration: RAID Level 0, Single disk
Status: Not redundant. A disk failure will render this volume dead.
    RAID Disks:

    Ch 1 : Hitachi HDS5C4040ALE630 [3726 GB]
    3721 GB allocated

This is for the Hitachi Deskstar 4TB 3.5" internal Mfr# 0S03359

For those of you that want to know how to get in to factory default mode, it's in the user manual. It's slightly different for each ReadyNAS model so the instructions below might or not work. (This will erase all your settings and data)

    1. Power off your unit.
    2. Using a straightened paper clip, press and hold the Reset button. (don't stop pressing until step 4)
    3. Press the Power button to power on the unit.
    4. Continue to press the Reset button until the status display screen shows a boot menu (or if not status screen - ie Ultra 2 - all the LED lights are on). Once you are at the boot menu, release the reset button
    5. Now Press the Backup button to scroll through the boot mode options to get to the Factory Default. (for Ultra 2 it's when Disk 1 LED light is on)
    6. When you get to the boot mode you want, press the reset button again to reset the unit

NOTE: This drive is still not on the 'supported' list so use with caution
  • LaRock - did you use Flex-Raid and set up a Raid0 volume? If so, addition of the second drive will not expand your volume automatically. You may want to do a factory default and select X-Raid2 on the reboot.

An Ultra 2 only has 2 drive bays. Adding a second disk adds redundancy to a X-RAID2 volume. It does not expand it. Perhaps LacRock doesn't want to have a redundant volume?
  • PapaBear,

I did the Raid0 on purpose. I want to have the drives act as 2 independent drives and not as 1 big drive or any mirroring/striping/backup. Good catch though. I appreciate the tip :)
  • just remember, the unit is not designed to add/remove drives for use as 'backups'.
  • TeknoJunky,

I know. :) Drive 1 I want to use as a backup for my desktop machine and Drive 2 for Media files for my media player. I just don't want the files from both drives mixed together as 1 drive.

The 4200 (12-bay rackmount) doesn't support consumer drives. Once enterprise drives are released the enterprise drives could be qualified.
