ReadyNV: Can´t get out the Tray...
Hi Folks,
seems to me i´m stupid. Due to a diskfailure i like to replace a HardDisk#2. But I can´t get the Tray out. Tried to push the Button and tried to do it with a paper clip. No latch comes out. It don´t even moves for one inch.
Any Trick or Idea?
Thanx!

- akamanAspirantThank you. I'll try this tonight. I searched around a bit more and found that this is more of a severe problem than I thought. Obviously I'm not the first.
To connect threads, here is a description of what Brian mentioned above:
viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5286 - sclepjonesAspirantHaving spent ages on the phone to Netgear Support (?) re this problem I think (seeing as my NAS unit is still in warranty) that Netgear should just offer to replace the sticking disc trays no questions asked, rather than mucking around asking us to stick pins here and there! When the unit was new (11 months ago) you just pressed the bottom at the bottom of the carrier and the lever popped-up, now it's a matter of brute force or the "fix" above. Common Netgear, just send me two new carriers!

Rather than piggybacking this thread perhaps open a new one. If you want help from our Jedi friends (if they are able to provide it) then perhaps you should mention your case number.
There is now a newer tray design (with a rectangular button) used by the NVX that shouldn't have this problem however I think if you can get replacement trays for the NV+ from NetGear it would be likely to be ones using the old design. - smellarsAspirantHi, I have the same problem. 3 out of 4 of my drives cannot be removed. I'm trying to update disks and this is pretty frustrating considering my expectations of the device. Is Netgear replacing defective disk trays?
- smellarsAspirantOk, I've managed to get one out with minor damage to the plastic around area B. This is obviously a design fault and I would expect a replacement part is available by now? Its pretty poor, the thing ReadyNAS is designed about ease of drive upgrades. Obviously this is not quite as easy as one would think.

My recently purchased NV+ has what I think must be the new design that you refer to. The button at the bottom has a rectangular shaped cutout rather than the circular one shown on page 1 of this thread. - smellarsAspirantWow, thanks Vallejot5.
I followed your advise, a little silicon and its better than new. Not something I should have to do for the price paid and I'll look closer at alternatives next time I'm due for an upgrade. Netgear should really upgrade the faulty part. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

Yes. New NV+ should come with the new design tray (unless they are ones that were produced a long time ago and have been sitting on shelves for a long time). - linkup1AspirantHello,
I never knew about the stuck button problem until a couple days ago. I had only installed 5 drives in my ReadyNAS Pro when I bought it. The 6th tray was in a drawer and never subjected to dust. I was put a new drive in the tray and when to open the latch to install the drive and discovered it was stuck, before ever putting it in the NAS. I don't know how many of my buttons are stuck. I bought my NAS last December, WAY after this problem was discovered as I see notes dating back to 2007. That is over three years of shipping a known defective product.
This message string lets us know how to get a drive out without using brute force like one person did. That doesn't explain why known defective parts were shipped for so many years and when I asked for help, I was referred to this string on how to get my drives out, but wasn't offered new properly designed trays.
I shouldn't have to spend even 10 minutes per tray fixing the problem. I don't think 10 minutes is very realistic as you have to take the drive out of the tray first, do the repair, and then put the drive back in, etc.
Netgear should provide free replacement trays to anyone asking for one and shouldn't ask us to send the bad ones back as they are junk and the return postage is more costly than the value of the defective trays.
Netgear support has not offered me replacement trays, only referring me to this message string to learn how to overcome their design problem.
I want Netgear to send me six new trays, assuming the new rectangular button design is now available per an earlier note.
Netgear needs to take responsibility for knowingly sending out defective products for YEARS!! - PapaBear1ApprenticeI would take exception to the description of the trays as defective. Yes, some are sticky, but a few minutes spent with them cures the problem. I am of the opinion that perhaps the trays become "sticky" over time. When I first got my NV+, I removed all four trays without problems. I then replaced the ones for bays three and four since I was going to install only two drives. A little over a month later, the drive in bay 2 failed and I had to replace it. To this point I had no trouble removing any of the trays.
Fast forward three years, and I was going to add additional drives and I could not get the tray in bay 3 to release, so I tried bay 4 with no better luck. I then used the small screwdriver to bypass the button in the manner I described in one post. Once I had the trays out, I looked at the release mechanism and exercised it several times. I have not had any problems getting the drives to release since.
From you post, I get the impression the empty tray was not installed in the Pro leaving one bay without a "cover". This can upset the airflow in the unit and cause the other bays to get less airflow than was intended by the design.
If you had one tray fail, support would most likely replace it, but to ask them to replace all 6 because the releases are sticky is not likely to be sucessful.
