There are limited units that have encountered this issue in the past. We found from past cases where the issue can happen with a reboot when the unit has been powered on for more than 3 weeks. It would be common for most users to encounter the issue durring firmware update since these rackmount units (RR3312/RR4312) do not go through regular power (reboot) cycles.
Are you able to provide remote access to this unit so we can investigate your unit?
You can enable remote access from System -> Settings -> Support -> Secure Diagnostics Mode and PM me the 5-digit number.

I have two 4312Xs that exhibit the same behavior. As a matter of fact I am now leaving to drive to the remote site to power cycle the unit. Should I email the logs from both or is this an adjustment to the bios that requires Netgear remote access?

You can provide us the logs if you gather them.
Otherwise, we have some lab units that are experiencing the issue that we are currently investigating.

I am wondering if simply rebooting the NAS before doing the upgrade would be an effective workaround.
