Restriping, 120 hours?
Hi all,
I know my Pro Pioneer is ancient and I hope to replace it soon. But in the meantime I replaced a drive and it is now restriping. I know that it takes a while to restripe, but is 120 hours correct? I remember it taking half a day, but I don't recall it being 120 hours. What do you think is going wrong?

How long has it actually been running? The estimated completion times aren't very accurate, so if the disks are healthy then it likely will complete faster than that.
But it is possible that another disk isn't healthy. So I suggest looking at the smart stats. If you download the full log zip file, you will find them in disk_smart.log. You can download them again in a few hours, and compare them. If you are running 4.2.x firmware, you can also look in the on-screen log - reallocated or pending sectors, and timeouts should be in there.
Thanks for the reply. I have four disks total, one which I replaced yesterday afternoon and it's now at 15%, but saying 115 hours, but it's really been closer to 12 at this point, so I guess that's off. The other three disks are showing healthy, one at 41k hours and the other two at 15k hours. Reallocated sectors is 0 for the three disks (obviously I can't see the new disk).
Guess I'm just going to cross my fingers for now. At least I have a backup.
What disks are you using (including the new one)?

With a processor and memory upgrade and conversion to OS6, your Pro can still serve you well. Or, even left as-is, it'll make a fine backup for your new NAS. The memory upgrade is just putting in another memory stick (unless you have already done so) and/or replacing the old one with a bigger one. The processor is a bit more complicated, but it is socketed.
The processor upgrade and OS6 conversion do make you inelegable for Netgear support, even paid. So you have to rely on this forum. If you are uncomforatble with that, leaving it as-is is best.
The actual usable speed of my converted Pro's was equal to my RN516. I converted to rack mount units for entirely different reasons than primary NAS speed. In fact, the slowness and other issues with EDA500 expansions were one major factor, and those were current models at the time
Interesting. I'm pretty sure I maxed out the RAM some time ago, but it's still at 30% striping and I don't see anywhere in the menu to check on that. I don't think I have support anymore, this device is well over 10 years old?
Is there a how-to for the processor upgrade? It could be worth a shot. I would *love* to be able to run OS6. Gonna go search, but I don't recall seeing this in the past...? Or maybe I thought it was past my capability or I was worried about destroying it. I need to upgrade at this point anyway (restriping is only at 30%! I know in the past it would've been well done by now!), so I might as well try to upgrade.
So I've tried searching on this and think I figured out why I never upgraded my NAS. I'm still on the old BIOS and the reason is probably that I couldn't figure out how to upgrade the bios. I used to be good at this stuff but I got sick back in 2015 and now I have trouble with stuff like this (yeah, lost my job as a programmer too as I can no longer program, oh well).
I think at this point I'm better off getting something new when I can afford it and then passing this guy on to someone else who wants to do a project.
