RN 104 poor performance -> unusable
Hi,
I have a RN 104 with 3 2TB disks in RAID5.
The performance I'm talking about is simply FOLDER ACCESS!!
some folders can be accessed normaly, and others are just unbearable slow, like 7 minutes before I can see the content! and then after seeing the content, if I for exemple install a very small soft from there, it takes another 10 minutes, if it ever launch it.
I can't stand it any more, please help me :(

- 6rilAspirantAlso, I forgot to mention I've got another problem:
I can't power off the NAS, it goes in power off mode (led screen message) but NEVER switch off. - vandermerweMasterWhat firmware are you running?
What disks ( make and model) are you using? Are the disks' smart stats OK?
How you you accessing the nas? From a windows PC? How is the PC connected to the LAN and how is the NAS connected to the LAN?
So you have any apps installed? I see from some of your previous posts that you had transmission/torrent apps installed. Is that on this device?
Do you have antivirus enabled?
Do you have continuous protection enabled on any shares, particularly transmission shares?
Do you have COW enabled on any shares?
Have you always had this problem or is it a new problem?
How much space is free in the volume? - 6rilAspirantWhat firmware are you running?
6.2
What disks ( make and model) are you using? Are the disks' smart stats OK?
WD red 2Tb x3
How you you accessing the nas? From a windows PC? How is the PC connected to the LAN and how is the NAS connected to the LAN?
win7 x64 pc ->switch->NAS 2 pc actually, everything is going through gigabit switch

only app I use is Qbitorrent.
Do you have antivirus enabled?
It was untill 1 hour ago, I disabled it and it seems (NOT SURE AT ALL) to have improved access, but I never know since this pb sometimes stops by itself after a few painful connections...
Do you have continuous protection enabled on any shares, particularly transmission shares?
No
Do you have COW enabled on any shares?
COW??? don't know what your talking about, and i'm in the countryside.
Have you always had this problem or is it a new problem?
not new, i'd say almost since the start.
How much space is free in the volume?
1.94TB free of 3.56TB
thanks for your concern :) I hope you can help? - 6rilAspirantalso the other change I've made beside unableing the antivirus, is to switch on NFS on a problematic folder, all my other folder only have SMB enabled.. dunno if that's normal/better : /
- vandermerweMasterCOW is copy on write, or bit rot protection. There is a performance hit on the 100 series if it is enabled.
Torrent apps do seem to cause problems, one of which is fragmentation.
The first thing I would do is update the firmware to 6.2.1.
Leave antivirus off, the 100 series struggles with it as far as I can see.
Having nfs enabled shouldn't create performance problems like this.
If upgrading the firmware doesn't help, I would do a defrag of the volume.
It is also worth checking the smart stats for the disks, and also running vendor diagnostics on all the disks. This would require removing the disks from the nas with the power off connecting them to a PC and running WD lifeguard extended tests on each disk. If you do this remember to label the disks according to slot number and didn't power up again until the disks are all back in. - 6rilAspiranttrying and trying .. I mean to navigate inside all places of the NAS via win7 and it seems to be quite responsive now except folders with many files inside.
So maybe it was the antivirus...
but, does it mean I can't use the antivirus??? that's not very smart, to put such a necessary function and have it ruin the NAS behaviour : /
Also, I still need to check if I can now (I doubt it) switch off the nas, and not having it staying on for ever after the switch off process and having to unplug power to reboot.
After all the recent upgrades I had to unplug in order to reboot an carry on with the firmware upgrade
can't do that now for 6.2.1 have I'm in the middle of a 3D rendering, storing rendered images on the nas. - 6rilAspiranthow can I unable bit rot protection without going through every single folder ?
- 6rilAspirantyou said : "It is also worth checking the smart stats for the disks"
would you mind to elaborate on how to do that? I can't find anything close to such a thing in the NAS webui
and thanks for all the info ;) - vandermerweMasterWell the 100 series processors aren't that fast and antivirus even slows down the readynas devices with more capable processors.
COW is enabled/ disabled on a share by share basis, in share settings.
The smart stats can be seen of you click on the volume settings icon on the volume tab, select settings then disks.
Alternatively hover over the green dot next to each disk in the performance tab.
You are looking for errors. - 6rilAspirantthanks
zero errors on all 3 disks
Is there anyone from netgear ??? I'd like to know why I can't switch the NAS OFF.
