- phrozenAspirantI wonder if the price will go up, if the freezing bug is fixed... I suspect that the price was driven down quicker than it might have normally since many people knew about the bug.
- phrozenAspirantb.t.w. They have dropped to $140 shipped:

2) Is flashing the firmware on the drives going to wipe out the data, requiring a complete backup and restore and another week of downtime? To WHAT can I back up 2+TB of data anyway??? It seems that owning a ReadyNAS requires one to own TWO ReadyNASes.
;-)
I have totally thought this way before.. and for that reason I bought a $328 (eaegis.com) Thecus N4100+ NAS and put 4x 86$ one-terabyte drives in it ad use it as a full-backup for the readynas... The Thecus even has two gigabit ports (used on different subnets, not together) and FREE modules that allow synching with other devices, like the readynas, and even a FREE DLNA server module [i'm still irritated that I had to PAY for twonky for my readynas]. Now it's not as fast as the readynas, (it does stream high bitrate Bluray-rip test ".ts" files) but it allows me to upgrade capacity on one device, then the other, "back and forth", and avoid this "eternity" of disk expansion and offline volumes... - jmirabilAspirantWow, $140 shipped on newegg.... if only there was no tax...
I'm still not confident in using 4 of these drives in the readynas in place of my existing 4x1TB greenpower drives... too much worry and not enough bank for the buck
concerns:
Will disk spindown work?
Will the drives stream well--will they stall for seconds to minutes on large xfers?
Any other issues that would prevent them from not working 100% smothly with the readynas????
You gotta ask these questions if you're going to plunk down $600 and put these drives in one by one over about two weeks to expand the Xraid volume to about 4.3TB versus ~2.75TB... sigh... - captain1AspirantI have noticed that the Expansion % seems to stall and then LEAP ahead when I'm not watching. I surmise that this is due to the firmware bug causing one, or several, drives to stall out, and until ALL the drives start feeding data simultaneously the expansion cannot take place. When they do finally all sync up for a moment the data transfer is FAST (I have left the room for a few minutes, and returned to find several %points more on the expansion).
For the last 2hrs it has been stalled at 99.5%. - Balders1Aspirantviewtopic.php?p=128044#p128044
WARNING! Be aware of what may happen to your data if you upgrade to the new Seagate firmware!!!!! - captain1AspirantThank you everyone for participating in this forum. It's a blessing for us NAS Noobs to have your technical and moral support. :-)
I wanted to give a final update on the ordeal. The Volume Expansion did, in fact, finally complete today! It took about 50 hours, IIRC. All of our data appears to be intact. I will be testing out the streaming of data soon. Thanks for the warning about the new Seagate firmware update maybe not playing nicely with the ReadyNAS. If I read correctly, simply disabling the write cache resolves the streaming problem though, right? The trade off is a hit on write speed, I assume. That may be acceptable if we can maintain streaming speeds. We'll see. - reelmccoyAspirantAfter a bit of video podcast playback and now playing some FLAC files off my ReadyNAS Pro stuffed with what were SD17 revision 1.5TB drives and now SD1A flashed, no more stuttering. I can't say video was 100% glitch free but it could very well have been QuickTime glitches. I couldn't play back these types of things at all before the firmware update.
Now to migrate to using the RNP as my primary NAS and retire the NV to backups. :)
EDIT: Note, I never turned off Write Cache while I waited for the firmware update and it's still on now. - luriumAspirantIf anyone want the new firmware for 1,5tb drives they can get it from.
Upgrade file for Seagate ST31500341AS SD1A
Use for 9JU138 -300 and -336 part numbers only (firmware SD15 -SD19). DO NOT use on any other part number or firmware.

Thanks, but no luck. BigUpload.com link is a FAIL.
Has anyone else had problems with these drives POST FIRMWARE UPDATE like that guy above who claims a "vol c: is dead" error in thread viewtopic.php?p=128044#p128044 ???
