Slow GUI Access (FrontView)

This isn't really a performance issue. I get great read and write performance from both units. ~40Mbps read, ~23Mbps write to each.

Looked around but found nothing relevant so I'm posting here. I have two almost identical ReadyNAS NV+ v1. The only difference is one has 4x2tb drives and the other 4x1.5tb drives. I've checked all the settings and they are identical. They are attached to the same switch. I've even tried different ports on the switch and different network cables.

Both are as follows:
Model: ReadyNAS NV+ [X-RAID]
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.13 [1.00a043]
Memory: 1024 MB [2.5-3-3-7]

When I access the Web GUI, after clicking on the OK on the Windows credential dialogue, the first ReadyNAS displays the GUI and is ready to go in about 4.5 seconds. The second displays the main outline of the FrontView, but takes almost 45 seconds. Once it finally displays fully I can operate it normally. It's just that first access that dogs on the second ReadyNAS.

Any ideas? I've considered wiping the unit and starting from scratch but that seems rather drastic. This has been going on for almost a year but I'm getting really tired of it.

Thanks for any suggestions...

Looking at diagnostics.log I can see that you have disks with SMART errors.

Disks 2 and 4 appear to be failing. Did you get these errors recently?

I would suggest you power down, remove all disks (label order), hook the disks up to your PC and check all four of them using SeaTools. Don't just run the quick/short test.
  • I'm skeptical the drives are bad. One was replaced a couple months back. The reallocated sector counts on all the drives are 2, 5, 56 & 68. Not bad.

However I will take your advice and am currently running the extensive Sea Tools diagnostics now. I'll report back once the tests are complete.
  • Your level of skepticism should be matched by the quality of your backup strategy.

Disks 2 and 4 also have ATA errors. You don't normally get ATA errors on good disks. Something must be causing Frontview to be slow and a bad disk is a real possibility.

I use one NV+ to backup to the other. And they are both on a UPS. So what is wrong with that?
  • Nothing is wrong with that.
My point is that ata errors on all 4 drives, with 2 counts exceeding 50, is not a secure situation. If you want to wait and watch (in other words, be skeptical) you should have a robust backup in case you are wrong.

Reallocated sectors on all four drives and ATA errors on two of them actually.

The disks with ATA errors are likely failing but it could be any of the four disks.
  • Well so far, two discs (2 & 4) have passed the Sea Tools long generic test. I'm going to try and test the other two today.

May also be worth running the memory test boot menu option on the NAS a few times.
