Suddenly making very loud buzzing sound
I've had my NAS for several years. Seem to remember having changed the fan once fairly early on. Suddenly now very loud buzz. I've taken it apart to see if the fan looked like it was rubbing but doesn't seem to be. Actually sound seems to decrease when I put pressure on the plug or screw in screws tighter. Does this really sound like the fan and if so, where do I get a new one? Someone else set it up for me and I've done nothing since however, he's out of town and so i'm on my own.
Thank you,
Thank you,

- chirpaLuminaryThe system has no speakers in it. Could be one of the disks. Easiest way to test.. Shutdown NAS, remove disks (label order), power on with no disks. Does the same noise still occur? Then power off again and re-insert the disks.
- KnorskeAspirantI recently encountered a similar situation--the fan making a bunch of noise. I thought "dust," so I vacuumed the outside of the unit, took the two disks out and vacuumed them on the outside and then inside the unit. When I put the disks back in, the unit does not want to operate. The power LED just blinks. I tried power down with the power button (no response) and power down by unplugging. Still, the power button LED just blinks.
I have ALL my data on the disks, and I'm shuddering at the thought the data is gone. I do hope I can get the unit to operate.
Any suggestions?
If the unit is bad, can I get a new diskless unit, insert my current disks and continue without losing data?
Many thanks.
Merry Christmas!!! - alaninphillyAspirantGee, thought removing disks was a good idea until saw the second post. Haven't done that yet. Friend came by and thinks it is the fan in the power supply, rather than the big fan. Is this fan safely replaceable by itself or do you need to replace the whole power supply? Looked on line and apparently new power supply with a fan is $100 and one without the fan is $200. Anyone know where I can get a better price on the one with the fan? Out of warranty already so not worried about that issue.

What model NAS to you have? When was it purchased (it might still be under warranty).Knorske wrote: I recently encountered a similar situation--the fan making a bunch of noise. You could get a diskless replacement, as long as it is in the same platform family (sparc, x86, or arm).
You might want to create your own thread on this. - KnorskeAspirantStephen B...
I have a ReadyNAS Duo (v1-Sparc platform, according to tech), RND2100 series. Unfortunately, the three-year warranty ended on 01 December.
Hopefully, the ReadyNAS Duo (v2) uses the same platform...how does one know?
If I continue to have difficulty (if the v2 is "different," I will take your advice about a new thread. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe v2 is an arm platform, so you cannot migrate your disks to it. You need a NAS that runs 4.1.x firmware.
