the volume data is damaged
Happy Easter to all!
I had one hard disk failure on my Readynas Ultra 2 (while on Raid 0).
I have formatted both hard disks, sent back the fault one, intalled the lates OS 6.X firmware, rebuilt my database on the the good HD using X-Raid configuration.
Now I have received the 'new' hard disk (Red 3 TB WD) and after checking it with a PC, I have inserted in the 2nd bay, with the Readynas off.
This is what happened after I have turn it back one (translated):
Sun Apr 5 2015 12:05:55
Disco: Lo stato del disco nel canale '2' (Internal) è passato da RESYNC a ONLINE. (Status of Disk on Ch 2 from Resynch to Online)
Sun Apr 5 2015 12:05:48
Volume: L'operazione di ricostruzione è terminata sul volume 'data'. Tuttavia, il volume è ancora danneggiato. (Resynch completed, but volume still damaged')
Sun Apr 5 2015 11:43:39
Volume: Ricostruzione avviata per il volume 'data'. (Reconstruction started for volume 'data')
Sun Apr 5 2015 11:43:25 Volume: Il volume 'data' è 'Degraded'. (volume 'data' is 'degrated')
Sun Apr 5 2015 9:14:16
Volume: Lo stato del volume 'data' è passato da 'Unprotected' a 'Degraded'. (Status of volume 'data' from 'Unprotected' to 'degraded')
Sun Apr 5 2015 9:12:50
Volume: Ricostruzione avviata per il volume 'data'. (Reconstruction of volume 'data' started)
Now the system show "the volume data is damaged".
What can I do? What I did wrong?
Thank you in advance!

- alphapapaAspirantI did test that disk with lifeguard less then a week ago.
No problem at all.
Strange that 'disk one' is the problem only now that I have added 'disk two'.
Any other suggestions? - alphapapaAspirantOk..
So Disk 1 was the good one until today.
It has all my data stored in it.
I have now the brand new Disk 2 installed in a Raid 1 configuration.
The system told me that the resync is completed, therefore I should be able now to remove Disk 1 and use Lifeguard to write zeros in order to see if the pending sectors get fixed, right?
Then when I will put Disk 1 in the Nas, everything will be restored, right?
Any additional precautions I shuould do before wiping Disk1? - vandermerweMasterDid you test the disk using the long or extended test?
Don't do anything else until you have a backup of the data on the nas.
Your proposed actions should work, however pending sectors are not likely to be "fixed". Is that disk under warranty? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe pending sectors would be reallocated if you do the (destructive) write test (assuming that the writes fail on those sectors, which is what generally happens).
I'd make sure I had a backup first. - alphapapaAspirantThanks for the help!
I did the extended test and it was fine.
Since I have a Raid 1 config in place, don't I have already a back up established?
If I remove the disk 1, format while testing it or even replace it, shouldn't everything be restored once I put a disk back in the slot one?
Why I need a second back up? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
RAID is not a backup, and it is risky to trust your data to a single device. RAID volumes sometimes fail, and NAS can malfunction in a variety of other ways that can compromise your data.alphapapa wrote: Since I have a Raid 1 config in place, don't I have already a back up established?

So everything "should" be restored once you replace the disk, but "should" is an important qualifier. There are other possibilities for loss in the bigger picture (user error, fire, theft, and the like). So I recommend backing up to a different device (and personally I also back up to a cloud service for disaster recovery). - alphapapaAspirantI wrote to WD support.
I will wait for them to reply before doing anything. As right now I don't have additional 3 TB where to store the back up of the back up.........
Anyway, your reply make sense but put me in a worried state.
So why should I bother to set my NAS in Raid 1? Maybe I should put it back to Raid 0, enjoy more space (almost 6 TB), and pair the NAS with an external 4 TB HD for the back up of "selected contenent" (150 euro for 4 TB WD My book....the 6 TB costs twice as much..).
This will avoid the 'single device' factor. Also the external will be formatted NTFS, and for what I have understood, that should be easier to recover data in case of falilure.
