Unable to access config menus on NV+
I have an old NV+ that has lain unused for a couple of years - I've powered it up and all seems well, I can access some old files in my share.
When I open the webpage in Chrome (or IE) I get the INFRANT Technologies splash screen, together with the list of shares - one of which I can access ok.
I cannot get to any setup options however - I want to scrub the system clean and start over; I also suspect that the firmware is a few generations behind.
Shouldn't there be a couple of buttons to enable me to get to setup from the main page? All I have are print, email, refresh and log out (this latter being at the bottom of the screen)

- ddobsonAspirantOk, it passed all of the memory tests without problems being reported.
dermot - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHave you tried a different USB stick for USB Boot Recovery? Not all USB sticks are compatible.
- ddobsonAspirantI tried three different ones, two small of 128 and 256MB and a newer 2GB one with the same result.
The 4GB and 8GB ones I tried (being thorough here...) didn't get past an init USB message - no error, just stalled.
When I try to boot, I get the welcome message OK, just when it continues that it fails.
Factory reset still results in a firmware error message.
Currently, it is a brick - is it worth trying an older version 3 firmware, more similar to what it would have originally been shipped with? (and if so, where can I find one?)
At least then I could start over with a known working device and try firmware updates incrementally.
cheers,
dermot - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could try a v3 image and if that works then attempt to update the firmware again. Do note though that after updating to RAIDIator 4.x you can't downgrade to RAIDiator 3.x without doing a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything).
- ddobsonAspirantOK - tried a v3 image - seems to have updated OK and then did a factory reset.
It has rebooted, but for 15 minutes now saying 'Booting' and 'Awaiting Radar' with the Activity led flashing at around twice per second with the power led about half that. One difference between this and ver 4 is that the led for disk drive 4 goes out; previously it stayed on after firmware error message appeared.
Tried a restart and get firmware error once again...
dermot - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAre you sure the disks are O.K.? Try doing a factory default with just one disk installed.
- ddobsonAspirantAs before, I get a kernel panic - on close inspection, when I try to boot from USB to reload, I see the word 'recovering' flash up very briefly before 'kernel panic' appears.
Essentially, I get the same message sequence with difference revisions, except on one occasion with v3 when it hung at 'awaiting RAIDar'... but not repeated.
So, to sum up, if I try to reload from USB, I get 'usb init' then 'recovering' for a moment followed by 'kernel panic'
Rebooting after that gives 'Welcome to the ReadyNAS world' for some seconds, then 'booting' followed by 'ERR: Bad firmware' I get these results with just a single drive (several known good ones) in bay #1 or a full set of 500GB ones, both Western Dig and Seagate.
A long press on reset while power on starts the firmware reload, but ends in Bad firmware.
Interestingly, if I try and reload from USB with no drives fitted at all, I still get 'recovering' for a moment then 'kernel panic' - when firmware is reloaded, is it stored on flash memory and not on the drives, or does this sequence denote a failure in the SATA drive controller?
Can't think of anything else to try...
Thanks for suggestions so far, any further thoughts?
dermot - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt could indicate a problem with the firmware on the flash.
Could you try reloading the RAIDiator 4 firmware via USB? - ddobsonAspirantYes, Tried reloading rev 4 firmware from USB several times with one known good drive in bay #1. (Tried with an original 500MB drive, another that has been formatted in a Windows box so I know it is good and also a new straight out of the packing 1GB Seagate drive.
As before, it boots from USB, briefly flashes up 'recovering' then 'kernel panic'. A reset leads to the 'welcome to readynas' message then gives 'Bad firmware' as before.
I've just performed a TFTP reload, as per the documentation and it has uploaded successfully, but the LCD display is just sitting on:
'Found TFTP image successful!'
with no leds on (inc power led) and no activity at all. It does not proceed to restart by itself, as I understand that it should, just sits there.
dermot - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI didn't suggest to do a TFTP boot recovery. That's a dangerous procedure.
When did you purchase this NV+?
