Volume scan failed to run properly.

I can't seem to fix this scan problem or get the snapshots to work anymore.

Here the issues & timeline:
Aug 16: "Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day. Disk 1: Previous count: 0 Current count: 1 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk."
>Reading in the forums this dosn't appear like a big deal at this point, will continue to watch.

Aug 21 - 23: Attempted to run a scan upon reboot received "Volume scan failed to run properly." attempted 2 other reboots & scan, one resulted in pressing the set button and other I had to physically pull the plug (that was painful).

Aug 23: Upgraded the code from 4.1.5. "Your ReadyNAS device has been updated with a new firmware image. (RAIDiator 4.1.6)". Did a reboot & scan that failed. I'm also getting "Unsuccessful taking snapshot."

In another post I saw someone checking the /tmp/fsck.log and I see similar issues.
Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks...
fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/c/c_2009_06
_24_00_00

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

Does anyone have some additional ideas?

  • Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a147]
    Memory: 256 MB [2.0-3-3-7]
  • I also just got an ReadyNAS 1100. Should I correct the volume scan failure on the 1000S, before moving the disk to the 1100? or is better address in the 1100?

Moving to the 1100 is as simple as (hopefully?):
    1. Install the All disk in same numbered slots
    2. Boot NAS
    3. Upgrade Firmware
    4. Recalibrate the fan speed

Is the volume scan the same as a volume check? See faq.php#How_can_I_skip_the_Volume_check%3F

Not sure whether technical support will help you if you have issues moving from an out of warranty ReadyNas to a new one.

I'd wait for Jedi to comment on whether it's ok to move your disks to your new ReadyNas or not with a failed volume scan.

Your procedure for migrating disks should be fine. See faq.php#How_do_I_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_ReadyNAS_to_another%3F'

You may need to do a USB Boot Recovery and Firmware Re-install when you've moved the disks to the new ReadyNas.

    See faq.php#How_can_I_perform_a_Boot_Recovery_using_a_USB_flash_device%3F
    then faq.php#How_do_I_re-install_the_firmware%3F

  • To close the thread. Basically, I have a corrupt snapshot that with some Jedi Council assistance was remove and all when back to normal.
