Win Users file access \ mod issue #25383389
Hi,
I'm trying to implement some user \ group management on my NAS Duo v2. firmware 5.3.11
The issue I'm seeing is that a user can create a folder and save files but a different user is then being denied access. If I hit 'reset permissions' at the bottom all becomes OK until the next restart.
Each windows users is set up as a user on the NAS with matching pw. I've assigned them to a group called 'office' and set the permissions for the volume concerned to:
SMB
Read Write access ticked for each of the users plus the group 'office'.
Automatic permissions is ticked
File creation button options in the protocol specific options are set to disabled.
Folder Owner: nobody
Folder Group: nogroup
Folder Owner\Group\Everyone all Read\Write.
Fingers crossed I'm missing something simple, but it's new ground to me.
Any help or suggestions appreciated :)
Thanks
David

- EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredHi David,
sometimes it is best to not set up identical users on NAS and Windows. Could you please try your setup again with different usernames and see if this works.
Bye,
Eskender - david000AspirantHI Eskender,
Thanks for your reply.
The reason for replicating the Windows users names on the NAS is that I'm unable to connect to a NAS share at all with a different user\pw login to the current windows users. The pop up suggests that using more than one name are not allowed. I've just checked again with a couple of machines and it's still the case.
To expand on the he problem, if user A creates a File or Folder, user B and user C are unable to edit it (or sometimes access if a folder). The same applies to files created by the other users. Only the user who created the file can access it. All users have the same read\write premisions set on the NAS and are members of the same NAS group, also with read\write. If user A logs in to a different PC, the file still opens.
If I hit 'reset permissions' in the 'Files and Folders' section access is enabled for all users to all files.
I wondered of the settings in "Files and Folders" need an amend ? Would a screen shot help ?
Basically what I'm trying to achieve is to be able to manage access to different shares for different windows users. How's this usually done ?
Thanks again,
David - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredA screenshot would be helpful.
- david000AspirantCheers, some screen shots in a dropbox account. Sorry I don't seem to be able to embed them. I think I've included everything but let me know if any element is missing. The user credentials on the NAS are the same as those for the Windows machines. This is Peer to Peer - we are not using domain control or anything like that.
Cheers :)

^^ The settings for the share we are trying to set up for user access as above. Split over 3 shots due to scrolling.
some users to be able to read\write all on there as files are added by other users in the list. At a later date I'd like to add\amend individual user access for either read only or no access. - david000Aspirantbump..
- EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredHi,
sorry I am not too familiar with OS 5. Anyway, this short thread might be of some help:

Bye,
Eskender - david000AspirantThat looks like the same issue. The chap doesn't say how he got around the issue - Would it be a case of recreating the Shares and mapping them again, or just a case of deleting the old mapped connections and remapping ?
- EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredHello,
it seems to me recreating the share was the solution. Maybe create a new test share first and you could experiment with that.

I tried both ways - disconnected the original mapped networked drive on the users machines, created users on the NAS, and then set them with read\write permissions on the NAS share. I then mapped the network dive from each user account on the PC to the share a fresh. Same result - User A can't write to User B's files and vica versa. .
So I created a new share volume. set NAS User A and B (already created) with read\write permissions to that share. Mapped the drive on both PC user accounts. Same result, the 2 users can't write to each others files.
To test the result I created a directory and text file under both users. I then tried to edit the other users text file. For both users, I could not save the amend to the other users account. This was on an old XP system. I suspect on Win7 I may not have had access at all.
We're using this in a business application and I'm amazed that it's seemingly not possible to set this up ? It seems for any sort of collaborative sharing I HAVE to have anonymous access ? - david000Aspirantbump....
