ReadyNAS duo not visible to Time Machine
Howdy!
I am not a well versed IT user (i.e. dumb) and I am having problems to start using Time Machine and ReadyNAS. I was trying to follow the instructions posted in this article:
http://www.readynas.com/?p=1097
But ReadyNAS does not show up as an option when I have to "Choose a backup disk" (the list is empty).
AFP is turned on (I turned on both Appletalk and Bonjour just in case).
Current firmware version is RAIDiator 4.1.7-T49 [1.00a043]. I understand there is a new one (at least I got email updates advising me about it) but it says 4.1.7. I suspect -T49 was a "Beta" version and 4.1.7 is now official. Should I upgrade? I have 2x2TB disks installed in X-RAID mode and they are pretty empty (2% only). They are WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 (supposedly 4K sectors).
On the Mac side, I have Mac OS 10.5.8, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB SDRAM.
Any pointers will be much appreciated.
Happy 2011!

- satrijoeAspirantReally, no one?
- ChewbaccaAspirantIf they are 4k drives you definitely want to update and factory default.
Yes the T release is a beta. We have 4.1.7 out now. - nielsNLInitiateHi,
I had the same problem but I finally figured out what the problem was. Maybe it'll help you as well...
- Open Finder, From the menu choose Go - Connect to Server. Type in afp://<readynas>/ReadyNAS (substitute <readynas> with your ReadyNAS IP address).
- Login using username ReadyNAS and the chosen password, I also added the password to the keychain.
- You should now be able to see the ReadyNAS volume in Time Machine.
Hope this helps.
Niels. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhen you select the ReadyNAS (this should be visible in the list of options) as the backup disk you should be prompted to enter the username (ReadyNAS) and password.
If you can't see the ReadyNAS under the list of options on 4.1.7 then perhaps there is a router configuration issue.
A direct-connection would be a good way to determine if there is a router configuration issue. See http://sphardy.com/web/readynas/how-to-direct-connect-to-your-readynas/ - Hi there. I have the same problem - my ReadyNas Duo does not display in the Time Machine 'Select Disk' list. I have made a direct connection of ReadyNas to my iMAC and hey presto, the ReadyNas shows up for selection. So I'm thinking this is a router configuration issue and hence looking for some guidance from anyone out there please.
Here's my config:-
ReadyNAS Duo (direct ethernet connection to router below)
Radiator 4.1.8 / RAIDar 4.3.3
2 x WD Green 2TB disks (WDC WD20EARS)
iMac (Intel Core i5) running Mac OS X 10.7.2
HUAWEI EchoLife HG532 router
Do I need to setup some form of PORT MAPPING on the router, or perhaps a FIREWALL config on the iMac or router? Wild stabs in the dark.
Appreciate your help people!
Kind regards - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou need to look into whether your router supports multicasting and make sure that's enabled. It's possible your router is incompatible unfortunately.
- Thanks for the prompt reply mdgm. Typically, where would you expect to find Multicasting settings on a router? Quite a few places to check! BTW, a quick google of Multicasting for the Huawei HG532 doesn't return any results, so this isn't looking to good.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou might want to open a tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) and see if NetGear support has some suggestions.
- Hi mdgm. Happy New Year.
So, I've been onto a Broadband Router Advice website and posted there for some steer as to whether this HUAWEI HG532 router does indeed have Multicast settings that I can enable. I've received a response today that points me to the following screen shot, which I have now found on the router : http://screenshots.portforward.com/Huaw ... pgrade.htm
Trouble is, I'm totally out of my depth now I've located the Multicast 'Upgrade' screen. Do I 'enable'. What IP address do I setup? What Port Number should I enter?
Above all, do you think that this 'Multicast Upgrade' setting is likely to be the solution I'm after to have the ReadyNas Duo available as a TimeMachine backup destination via the Router?
Appreciate your help. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredTry IP address of NAS and port 5353
