An Open Letter To Netgear re Crippling NAS

Dear Netgear,

Here is why I will never ever purchase another NAS from Netgear.  I have a ReadyNas 516 that has worked perfectly for years.  Obviously, one of the important features of a NAS is being able to access it from outside one’s own network.  First, you crippled ReadyNas, which was Netgear’s baked in solution for accessing the NAS remotely.  That in and of itself was an outrage, removing a feature that many of us loyal customers depend on.  My 5216 with ReadyNas is worth something.  Without it, it is worth much less.  Not content to have crippled a feature that I paid for when I bought the NAS, Netgear pushed a sleazy firmware “upgrade” that removed one’s ability to update apps running on the NAS, so I have had to use a workaround to update my Plex Server.  So now, instead of having a NAS that is older and worked fine, I have a NAS that you have intentionally crippled to force me to buy a new NAS.  We’ll guess what?  I DID buy a new NAS, a Synology 1522+, which has tons of software, remote access, and all sorts of backup options.  Netgear, given your sleazy tactics with my “EOL” NAS, you have lost a customer and I would not even consider another Netgear NAS.  I can only vote with my pocketbook, and I have done so.  You do not deserve to have customers purchasing your NAS.

This forum is not Netgear support.  You are actually talking to a lot of people that share your view.

BTW, Netgear is out of the NAS business, so you couldn't have bought one of theirs if you wanted to.  But you can show your distain by not buying products that Netgear continues to sell.  I recently upgraded my mesh WiFi, and I didn't even consider Netgear products.

Yes, I have the Orbi Mesh system and because of my experience with the NAS, there is zero likelihood that I will be purchasing anything from Netgear in the future.  Who knows when Netgear will arbitrarily decide that the "greatest thing since sliced bread" is now an EOL POS and roll out "firmware updates" that cripple anything but the most basic functionality of the Orbi.  And have you seen the $$ that Netgear is asking for their new Mesh system?  Not a chance.
