Connecting mac book air with Lion to NAS NV+ directly

My NV+ was working fine through my router and an old macbook 2008 - now I got an air with lion and updated the firmware on the NAS as required and attempted a direct link from the NAS to the macbook air via ethernet.

Running Raidar 4.1.8 - it says the IP address is 192.168.168.168

As suggested in the manual I put:

"https://192.168.168.168/admin" into safari but it says it "Can't open the page"

In the manual it says to:

"ReadyNAS connected directly to your PC: If you are connecting a PC directly to ReadyNAS (and not through a network), first set a static IP address on your PC in the 192.168.168.xxx subnet, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. You can then use RAIDar to detect ReadyNAS, or you can open a browser and enter the ReadyNAS default IP address https://192.168.168.168/admin to connect to the ReadyNAS."

No idea how to set up a static address on the Mac / NAS ? Anyone can help?

Do you have a router that assigns IP addresses (DHCP)?

If so, it appears your NAS is no longer being assigned an address as the address your are seeing is the default in the absence of a DHCP server or static configuration. Check your router and possibly reboot it.

Thanks for your reply but I want to connect the NAS to my MacBook Air directly - using the ethernet cable plugged directly into the Mac (actually an ethernet USB adaptor as the Air does not have an ethernet port).

I want to go direct, bypassing the router - I understand it is possible.

The instructions sat to " .... first set a static IP address on your PC in the 192.168.168.xxx subnet, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. but I have no idea how to set up a static address on the Mac / NAS ? Anyone can help?

So you must have the USB ethernet adapter - right?

System Preference >> Network >> Ethernet >> Configure IPv4: Manually

but what numbers do I plug in:

IP address???
subnet mask???
router??? (I guess nothing here since it is a direct connection right?)

(I am a beginner in these things and know nothing about networking).

I now managed to get it going and I can see the NAS from Frontview - it all looked normal until I tried to access my shares in the finder however.

Here's what I did to access the NAS direct :

went to System Preference >> Network >> Ethernet >> Configure IPv4: Manually

IP address: I plugged in: 192.168.1.10
subnet mask: I put 255.255.255.0
router: nothing here

then I hit apply.

I powered up the NAS, plugged the ethernet cable into the computer.

Opened safari and typed:

https://192.168.1.10/admin/

but nothing shows up. On the NAS screen it says the IP is 192.168.168.168 so I also tried:

https://192.168.168.168/admin/

and it worked !! No idea why.

Then in the finder I clicked in the shared devices "homehknas" and I see my three shares appearing but when I clicked one of them called "storage", it says "The operation can't be completed because the original item for "storage" cannot be found".

So I clicked the next item down the list of shared devices "HomeHKNAS (AFP) and two shares appear called "homes" and "media".

"homes" contains two shares "admin" and "relisuco" but my other share called "storage" is nowhere to be seen.

I clicked "relisuco" and it seems empty but from Frontview it has some 420 GB in it!!

What is going on?
Why can't I access my own shares?

1. Your IP address should be of the form 192.168.168.xxx as described in the link given previously - so change it to 192.168.168.10 (instead of 192.168.1.10)

2. As you have not changed your NAS setup it should appear the same as when you used your previous MacBook, and you use it the same way.

3. The appearance of "homes"as a share means you are connecting to the NAS as the admin user instead of the whatever account you have setup on the NAS - so reconnect using the user credentials you were using when accessing the NAS from the older MacBook (probably called "relisuco")

I have set up my NAS in the "Share" security mode so there is only one "admin" account.

I have two shares set up only:

"relisuco"
"storage"

the system automatically added a third share "media".

Frontview is accessible through safari at:

https://192.168.168.168/admin/

IPV4 is manually set up however with :

IP address being: 192.168.168.10
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

If I hit "setup" on Raidar it takes me to:

https://192.168.168.168/admin/

and I can see front view all right.

If I type into safari;

https://192.168.168.10/admin/

It says page not loaded. it cannot find front view.

I can attach some pics showing my windows and status for your reference if you give me an email I don't think I can send them through here..

Main problems are:

1) why is the Relisuco share empty (it has 180 GB of data)
2) I cannot find the "Storage" share - it does not show up in HomeHKNAS(AFP)

This contradicts your last post where you stated:

"homes" contains two shares "admin" and "relisuco"

If "homes" contains a folder called relisuco then there is a user with that name also defined which then suggests your NAS is not in Share security mode

Because 192.168.168.10 is the address of your MacBook, not the NAS (which has address 192.168.168.168)

I would strongly recommend you contact Netgear Tech Support. If you have not changed your NAS setup then it should work as it did when connected via the router. Therefore you need someone to take a look at your NAS as the info you have provided is contradictory and anything I might suggest could result in data loss.
