Growing SMART Errors
Hi. My ReadyNas NV+ is displaying this error in its logs:
"Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day. Disk 2: Previous count: 39 Current count: 41 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk."
I check my ReadyNas logs frequently but have been away on vacation and wasn't around to notice the errors. I was just in my Nas folder working on documents when the following error displayed and was kicked out:
"\\Nas\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access to permissions. The specified network password is not correct."
As I scroll down my logs, there are several of these errors. One of my disks failed in the Spring and I believe Disk 2 is the disk that was replaced by Netgear. This caused us to purchase 2 more disks so all 4 slots are filled with disks. Netgear sent us a Seagate disk. Any ideas? 3 of the computers connected to Nas are Windows 7 and one computer is Windows 8.
Thanks so much.

Re: Growing SMART Errors
Do you have a backup?
How long ago were the disk error messages? You probably have a failed disk. It would be unusual I think for this to present as inability to gain access to a share though.
Can you access other shares?
What is the current health status of the NV+? Are all disk lights on? What does the information about the volume say?

Re: Growing SMART Errors
Yes, we have our NAS backed up to an external HD thankfully.
It looks like the errors started in mind-July. All of the disk lights were on, but I checked Disk 2 to make sure that was the one that Netgear sent us. I can now get back into Nas, but now the disk 2 light isn't on. So I am currently running a RAID Sync that is expected to finish in a little over an hour.
We can access the other share folders, too.

Re: Growing SMART Errors
If you are using XRAID you should be able to access the volume (even if it is no longer redundant).
41 bad sectors is a bit below Netgear's normal threshold for replacement, but it is concerning, especially since the count is growing. Personally I would probably get a replacement now, rather than wait.
Is disk-2 still installed? One option is to test it with SeaTools in a PC. The long-generic test would scan every sector, and could flush out more errors. The long write test is actually better at that, but it is destructive. In my experience, those tests often raise the count enough to cross Seagate's failure thresholds (which are higher than I am comfortable with).

Re: Growing SMART Errors
Thanks, Stephen. Do you know what their replacement threshold is off hand? I'm going to research this as well. I'll see if they will send me a replacement anyway, since it's the one that they sent my office.
I still have disk 2 installed in Nas. To use SeaTools, would I need to install the disk onto another computer? I've only learned about SeaTools today during my research of this problem.

Re: Growing SMART Errors
Netgear's knowledge base suggests 50, which I think is reasonable.

But I don't think this page is linked into the main sites at readynas.com or netgear.com any more.
SeaTools does require you to put the disk in a PC. Note you can use a USB adapter (or eSata).

Re: Growing SMART Errors
Despite Seagate's assurance that it should be possible, I've never managed to get Seatools to see a USB or esata disk with the windows version of Seatools.
I've always needed the dos version of seatools with a direct sata connection.
I may be alone of course.

This works for me with no problems. I've done this on both a Lenovo T410 laptop and an HP desktop.

Re: Growing SMART Errors
Hi everyone. thanks for the information. I still plan on contacting Netgear about this disk because now the green light for the second disk is not lit anymore, even after running the SATA reset. Last time I worked with them, it took over a week to resolve the issue. Hopefully that will not be the case this time around!

Just spoke to Netgear. They are going to replace the disk. Thank you all so much for your help!
