Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) updates please

I have a Pro business ed. and a Ultra4.

On the Pro business I need to populate with some bigger disks. We have a mix of Seagate ST33000651AS (3TB), ST3100034oNS (1TB), and WD2003FYYS-02WOB0 (2TB) already populated, all in the HCL.

The Ultra4 needs full population with 3TB disks.

Populating was much easier before the flood disaster struck the HD factories.

Nowadays 3TB's in the HCL are either not in stock, or very expensive.

A few new models comes around, but it doesn't look like they will ever hit the HCL ?

Newer models seem cheaper than older models, and in particular one model which fits the wallet is:

Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001. 7200RPM, and 3TB.

The WD Green 3TB in the HCL is also widely available, cheap enough, but it's only 5400RPM, and I don't want to kill performance.

* Can you Netgear tech guys confirm that you have tested the ST3000DM001, and if you have, did you find any problems ?

* If you haven't, why not, and do you plan on doing so ?

I also really think you should post more info on disks which do not hit the HCL, and post dates in the HCL (does it ever get updated with new 1,2 & 3TB disks ?).

Best Regards
RonA

  • I'm going to have to add a big "I agree" to this post. We're about ready to buy another NAS (Ultra 6 Plus or Pro 6) and I'm a little disappointed at the lack of options for hard drives on the HCL. The Thailand floods have obviously caused the problem here.

Of the seven 3 TB drives available at Newegg right now, only two of them are on the HCL and they're both 5400 RPM.

Of the six 3 TB drives on the HCL, as RonA mentioned they're only available from less known vendors and several of them only for ridiculous prices.

It would be a huge help if we could get some new large capacity drives certified for use in the ReadyNAS. As a long-time customer and "recommender" I think this should be a top priority of the ReadyNAS team.

I also agree a list of drives that specifically failed testing would be helpful as well. At least then we'd know if a drive is simply untested or not listed for a specific reason.
  • I have had good luck with the Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 drives I have put in my two NVX units (2 each) to increase the capacity over what I was getting with 4x1TB drives. They are Newegg three times as Hitachi uses opaque anti-static bags and only puts the part numbers on the outside. Granted they are 5900 RPM drives but I have not noticed that much of a difference on my NVX as they still saturate the bandwidth (70-75MB/s file transfer speed), although they may be a little slow in the Pro 6. The three are listed as 0S03230 - a bare drive for $237 (I have 5 of these, 1 is a spare), 0S03228 - retail boxed for $218 and 0F12460 - another bare drive for $247. If you look at the detail images of the drives on the Newegg website, you will not that the HDS5C3030ALA630 only appears on the drive label, and the three labels all have the same model number but are definitely different images. My four drives have been in service since last June. The 0S3230 is available from Amazon at $230. One of my drives came from Amazon and the other 4 from Newegg.
  • I have to realy agree to this post...

I have a ultra 4 with 4x of the 3TB Seagate ST33000651AS in the HCL (bought em before the flood), now im thinking on getting a Ultra 6 and migrate the drive over and get 2x Seagate 3TB ST3000DM001, and throw the old 2TB drives into the Ultra 4.

This plan will ofc fall on its face if i have to spend huge amount of money on the 3TB seagate drives in the HCL, also the 3TB drives in the HCL are not sold anymore from the big web stores i trust in my country due to new cheaper drives. And i can only get em from smaller "less trustworthy" stores that have low sales so they still have em in stock.

So like the OP said, test the Seagate 3TB ST3000DM001 allready and give us a tumbs up or thumbs down on it...
(as i understand it the ST3000DM001 is the new ST33000651AS only it lost the XT name (seagate is reserving the "XT" for SSD's now), and it has some higher storage density on the disks so it uses 3 instead of 4 plates).

The ST33000651AS is 2x the ST3000DM001 in price and most worth while webshops dont have the ST33000651AS, and dont get me started on the pricing on the Constellation drives (atleast for the home and small buisness market).
  • You just made the case that the ST3000DM001 is not similar to the ST33000651AS as they have different platters. This is similar to what WD did with the WD20EARS and that created all sorts of havoc (at least Seagate had the honesty to change model numbers which WD did not). One day last week I was looking at hard drives on Newegg and there were only two listed with capacities of 3TB. Today at least the count is up to 8.

Netgear will not tell you if the HD they tested failed, they will only tell you the ones that passed.
  • PapaBear, thank you for the tip on the Hitachi P/N, I'll search using those parameters. Is there a confirmed list anywhere that matches the Hitachi model number to the P/N listed on websites? This would make things much easier for everyone.

However the original point remains. Some of the 3TB drives currently on the HCL are in short supply, while their replacement models are plentiful and much cheaper. The Seagate ST3000DM001 has been on the market for over 4 months now and sells for $60 cheaper (at Amazon) than the old ST33000651AS. That is basically buy 3 get the 4th free and would save $360 total!

I don't know what is involved with certifying a drive but it should be a top priority to keep current drives listed on the HCL for the currently shipping top-of-the-line desktop ReadyNAS like the Pro 6. I can understand if they won't take the time to test drives in the old ReadyNAS 600, but it shouldn't take 4 months to get Seagate's current mainstream 3 TB drive tested in the current Ultra and Pro models.

Again a little communication could go a long way. For example:
+ Currently testing, hold tight for results.
+ Haven't tested yet (but do or don't plan to).
    + Failed testing.

Now of course my statements ring a little hollow to the bean-counters considering I went ahead and bought a Pro 6 anyways. But as I sit here agonizing over my limited HD choices I find myself pretty frustrated at the situation. Obviously at least two other users agree with me.

For the Infrant ReadyNAS 600A you should use the NV+ (v1) list. Most drives compatible with the NV+ (v1) should be compatible with the 600A. The 600A and NV+ (v1) do not support 3TB drives. 2TB or smaller capacity drives are the ones to use.

As for when they add more drives to the list we'll have to wait and see.

mdgm, I appreciate the tip, I'm not looking for new drives for my 600. I just used it as an example that I completely understand Netgear not taking the time to test new drives in an old discontinued product (despite the fact that it still works great)! :D
  • I just installed 4 x ST3000DM001 (3TB) into a brand new Pro 6. Fail - Drives spin up ok, but are only recognised as 750Gb each.. Just updated the firmware to 4.2.20, now trying work out how to "reset" the drives to see if that helps.

    Any suggestions?

Update - Firmware upgrade seems to have fixed it.
    Ch 1 : Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 [2794 GB] 742 GB allocated

Just got to allocate the rest of the disk...

    WooHoo!
  • Hi Wirregar,
I'm really interested in your experience with ST3000DM00 drives (seems going to be successful with 4.2.20 !).

When fully allocated and running feel free to post some information on temperature and noise (also performances if possible).
I'm near to buy 5 * 3Tb drives to update my legacy Pro Pioneer (x86), first guess was Hitachi 5K3000 (on HCL) but seems not easily available so i'm looking at ST3000DM00 (not on HCL but cheaper and available here).

    Thank's and Regards
