Help with New hard drives and RAID RN214

Hello, help wanted please....
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS RN214 and had 1 x 10TB disk in a RAID 1 setup. I have now ran out of space so I bought 4 x 12TB new hard drives. I haven't backed up the original hard disk as it's almost full with 10TB of data and didn't have the means to back it up.
I shutdown the NAS, removed the original hard disk, inserted the new 4 x TB and configured with a RAID 5 and it's now all done and re-synched. I now have a problem of transferring my data from the original 1TB hard drive to the new setup.
I later read that I could have just inserted the new hard drives into the NAS and it would have re-synched and adjusted the storage capacity. However, being that the original HD was RAID 1, wouldn't the new storage with the new disks stay at RAID 1? And if I was to change from RAID 1 to RAID 5, I would have lost all my data anyway?
Anyway, I'm looking for a solution please and hopefully someone can kindly provide one on how I can get all my data transferred over to the new storage area please. There is no fault with the original HD and it works perfectly.
I also thought about, re-inserting the original 10TB hard drive in by itself, then re-inserting the 12TB hard drives but was scared to do so in case it performs a factory reset and then I would lose all my data.
Any help appreciated please, thank you!

No, it would have been converted to RAID-5 when you hot-inserted the third disk, with no data loss.

- Destory the current volume, and then power down the NAS and remove the disks.
- Re-insert the first disk by itself, and power up. It should boot with no problem.
- Confirm that you are in X-RAID mode (green stripe on the X-RAID control on the volumes tab)
- Hot-insert the first new disk, and wait for the resync to complete. Note you might need to select it and format it on the volumes page.
- Hot-swap the original disk with one of the new ones and again wait for the resync to complete. You will see a small expansion at this point (to 12 TB or ~10.9 TiB).
Now hot-insert the two remaining new disks one at a time (waiting for the resync and expansion to complete, before hot-inserting the last).

RAID isn't enough to keep your data safe, so you should acquire the means to back it up. USB drives are one approach.

Re: Help with New hard drives and RAID RN214
Thank you very much for your help and support with this.
This has worked without any problems and all my data is preserved as you said.
I will now look into a separate backup solution to keep the data safe.
