RN212 v6.10.5 Hot Fix 1- Antivirus Scanner Failed to Update

Antivirus scanner definition file update failed due to download failure. Check your Internet connection.

The last update was 10/28/2020

I've read previous threads of users uploading the latest firmware however, that did not work for me. I also attempted to enable and renable the Virus Scanner and that did not work.

Do you know what is causing all those service restart messages? They aren't normal.

How full is the OS partition (not the data volume)?

Re: RN212 v6.10.5 Hot Fix 1- Antivirus Scanner Failed to Update

@ StephenB, My guess is the reported error (ReadyNASOS service or process was restarted) has everything to do with the failing "antivirus scanner definition file update" and probably caused by consuming all the memory by the virus update process. I got the same errors when I encounter this issue.

@ jcontech, are you sure your upgrade to 6.10.5 or 6.10.5-hotfix1 went OK? Did you check your system.log-file and systemd-journal.log-file if the upgrade went OK?
Also here I encounter once an issue, the upgrade didn't go OK, but in the log via the webgui (tab SYSTEM - option LOGS) as well as in the main-overview (tab SYSTEM - option OVERVIEW) the new version was reported. So it looked like the upgrade was done correctly.
I downgraded my NAS to the previous version and automatically my system was upgraded again to the latest version correctly... and after that my virus-update-issue was solved.

An alternative could be do a scheduled manual update of the virus-def via the crontab

hopes it helps, regards

Quite possible, though I'd add a full OS partition might also be a cause.

Re: RN212 v6.10.5 Hot Fix 1- Antivirus Scanner Failed to Update

@ jcontech,

in another post I described a solution or by-pass which worked for me, so probably you did not see that post, so I re-post it here now:

1) enable SSH on your NAS (can be done via the gui: system-tab and option setting)

2) on your PC install WINSCP

3) FILE-PROTOCOL: SCP ; HOST NAME: IP-address of your NAS ; PORT NUMBER: 22 ; USER NAME: ROOT ;
(your ROOT-password is the same as your ADMIN-password) ; click LOGIN

4) similar to EXPLORER go to directory: /var/lib/clamav/

5) right-click the members (antivir;bytecode;daily;main;mirrors) and choose DOWNLOAD AND DELETE
put/save them somewhere on your PC

6) change or go to directory: /etc/clamav/

7) right-click on member freshclam.conf and choose EDIT

😎 click after "ReceiveTimeout 120" and hit ENTER
copy/past "TestDatabases false"
member should look like below:

DatabaseOwner root
LogSyslog true
LogFacility LOG_LOCAL6
Debug false
MaxAttempts 5
DatabaseDirectory /var/lib/clamav
DNSDatabaseInfo current.cvd.clamav.net
ConnectTimeout 120
ReceiveTimeout 120
TestDatabases false
ScriptedUpdates true
CompressLocalDatabase false
Bytecode true
NotifyClamd /etc/clamav/clamd.conf
OnErrorExecute /usr/bin/clamav_event -s 1
OnUpdateExecute /usr/bin/clamav_event -s 0
Checks 2
DatabaseMirror database.clamav.net
DatabaseMirror db.cn.clamav.net
DatabaseMirror db.tw.clamav.net

9) close window in which your are editing freshclam.conf (save it of course)
10) restart your NAS

Hopes this will solve your issue

Best option is to try 6.10.6 beta. https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta/ReadyNASOS-6-10-6-Beta/m-p/2151119#M10972

The version of ClamAV in 6.10.5 is being deprecated by the ClamAV folks.

Stephen,

thanks but as a 'Dummie' it's more wise to wait a few days for the final.

Up to you, of course.  I have more than one ReadyNAS, so I usually start with a backup NAS first, and see if it is stable there. Then install it on the remaining ReadyNAS.

FWIW, it is now released and not beta.  https://kb.netgear.com/000064345/ReadyNAS-OS-6-Software-Version-6-10-6 Normally there is a lag (up to a week or so) before it is put on the "check for updates" server
