ReadyNAS 2120 crashes after 6.4.1 update

Hello all,

First of all, I want to wish you a happy new year!

Here's the issue I have. We bought a ReadyNAS 2120 in 2014. It has been running well until we upgraded the firmware to 6.4.1.

We use the ReadyNAS to backup virtual machines some of which are pretty big. We use veeam to backup the VMs on the NAS and then we copy the data from the NAS onto an external HDD.

After the firmware upgrade to 6.4.1 the NAS started crashing when we tried backing up the data from the NAS to the external HDD. The data we are backing up is around 3Tb, it also contains one large file that is around 1Tb.

We wipe and format the external HDDs used in NTFS before plugging them into the NAS and starting the backup job.

Here's what happens when the crash occurs. The NAS stops responding to ping requests, you cannot ssh into it and the web interface is not accessible, also the lights on the HDD trays stop flashing. Currently, we cannot gracefully reboot it, it has to be shut off via the power button on the back.

After that, the NAS reboots and starts resyncing all of it's data, which takes around 14hours if we disable all services and leave it be.

We tried searching the logs , but the crash occurs before anything could be written in the log files so after the crash and before the reboot the logs are empty.

The same crash occurs if we enable SMB. First we though that the reason could be veeam, but the veeam jobs are running just fine and succeed backing up the data on the NAS.

So we disabled the veeam jobs and left the NAS with only the SMB service enabled and it crashed which we found to be quite strange. As before, there was nothing interesting in the logs.

I was able to copy the data by hand from the nas to the external HDD by plugging the external HDD into my laptop and accessing the data via a shared folder, but it was not really a fun thing to sit one week in the server room Smiley LOL

What I observed is that if I would copy all of the data at once the NAS would crash. If I went by small copies less than 3hour transfer, the transfers would succeed. It seems to me that something overloads, I don't know if it's RAM, CPU, HDDs, or something else though.

One file caused me some trouble though. It is around 1Tb and the transfer would take a few hours, which was basically playing russian roulette to see if it would succeed or if the NAS would crash, corrupt the file transfer and I would have to start again.

Currently the HDDs we have are reported to be healthy. We have one HDD that reports 1 pending and 1 uncorrectable sector, but I will be quite surprised if that is the cause though.

There are no Apps running on the NAS, it has a few shared folders and the NICs are in adaptive load balancing teaming mode.

Do you guys have any idea what could be causing this, or do you have any advise on what else I could do to try and troubleshoot the issue?

Factory reset is an option, but I am keeping it as a last resort. Smiley Very Happy

Thanks!

You should give ReadyNASOS 6.4.2-T59 (Beta 1) a try.

We've shared this with some other 2120 users who have reported crashes on 6.4.1 and got some positive feedback.

Hello, mdgm thanks for the quick response!

I created the post and then found out the discussion on 6.4.2-T59 (Beta 1). Silly me Smiley Very Happy

I will try the firmware upgrade tomorrow as the NAS is currently resyncing.

Thanks again!

I'd much rather you ask a question than to wish you had later. Your post was quite sensible.

Re: ReadyNAS 2120 crashes after 6.4.1 update

Upgrading the firmware to the 6.4.2 beta has fixed the issue. I was able to do a full backup from the NAS to the external HDD with 0 crashes or issues.

Thanks again for the help!
