After the backup, maybe you can give us SMART stats on the disks.

Upgrading to current firmware, and doing a factory reset with solid disks is the obvious path forwards.

Or upgrade to a new NAS, and let the duo v1 go.

What version of VMWARE should be used, please!

I have tried the Ubuntu image with VMware 6.5 and I certainly can't get it going. It boots without a NAS drive attached but fails to boot when added to the VMware configuration. Log indicates timing out waiting for the drive command to respond, which continually repeats.

The main issue is when adding a physical SATA (raw)drive WMware insists on adding it as an IDE.

I have attempted to manually edit the VMDK and VMX and change te drive from IDE to SCSI as suggested in VMware support forums but still no go.

So if the version of VMware that was used can be stated that may help.

Another option would be to boot your PC using a Linux Live CD.

I lost files on a ReadyNAS Pro 2 with current firmware, 4.2.26, data journaling was off...
Actually all the files in a share are gone.

Just double-checking that this means files MIGHT be able to be recovered if data journaling was disabled...if I can find the right pixie dust..

Only two disks in this NAS, they are in good condition.
Would any Linux software might be able to read them and recover the missing files??

The Dekkit VM might not work for me as it's for an older NAS...ReadyNAS Pro 2 is 'newish' compared to NV+.

What if I booted my notebook with a Linux Live CD and attached the NAS to the notebook -- could something be done that way?? -- but what, how??

I could reinstall Paragon EXTFS drive reader software for Windows but I'm fairly sure it won't read the disk/files based on past experience.

Are there any other good EXT filesystem readers for Windows?? I'm sure the Pro 2 is ext3.

Meanwhile I've shut down that ReadyNAS Pro 2 for now.

How did you lose the files?

Did you delete them?

What kinds of files are these?

Do you have a backup?

The Pro 2 would be using EXT4.

OIC...files were deleted by mistake and the backup was also deleted by mistake...
Files are just software stuff and text files and zip files etc. etc.
I think I just have to give up...

Hi all.

I found this topic during the search for a solution but it seems that I need some help to confirm that what I'm trying is possible.

I'm trying to help my girlfriend small company (3 architects) with their network (computers, security...).

I'm just begining in this part and as it's not my principal job I lack some knowledge.

They are using a ReadyNAS Pro 6 with 2 disks (2 To) configured to use XRAID 2

They have been attacked at the beginning of this week due to an external (from a chinese gateway) https access.

Many data have been deleted but they were able to save some of them (not a lot) before disconnecting and shuting down the NAS.

Of course, the backup was not configured so they have totally lost everything.

Do you think that I can bring back some information by myself or must I contact a specialised company ?

I've downloaded the acmtn debian but I'm not able to mount the disks connected throught USB disk cradles (partitions are correctly recognized under windows but not browsable).

The steps for the Pro 6 are different to the steps for Sparc.

For the Pro 6 you need to do e.g.

# mdadm --assemble --scan
# vgscan
# vgchange -a y
# mount /dev/c/c /mnt

You should check the health of the disks first and the state of the md arrays, particularly the one involving partition 3 or 5 (depending on when you last did a factory reset).

Recovering files that were not deleted should be possible.

As for deleted files that may be difficult or impossible.

The disks seems to be healthy as I'm totally able to use the NAS and to copy all the informations that were not deleted.

I think that nobody ever did a factory reset on this NAS (I've started to try to manage everything about 1 month ago).

My quest here is to find a way to bring back the file that were deleted (for exemple using foremost or any other tool).

Just for information I achieved to bring back many file (maybe all maybe not) using photorec (foremost wasn't able to bring back specific files like autocad or sketchup).

I was forced to recreate a new image because the downloaded ones were too old to allow the download of new packages (or I wasn't smart enought )

@mdgm-ntgr thanks for your help to mount the devices, even if I wasn't able to mount the raid (only one of the 2 disks) it allowed me to natively browse the file and bring back some of them.

As the format for the ReadyNAS is Ext4 this tool seems totally useless.
