Readynas NV+ Problem

Hi guys,

I recent had a problem with my readynas NV+.(4xWD 2TB) two weeks ago I had a power cut. after power back, I turned on the nas, on front panel it showed 'kernel panic', couldn't access in. i searched online, and decided to take the disks out one by one. power off, disk 4 out, accessed into system without problem. so I thought disk 4 maybe failed. I swapped the brand new 2TB WD red (WD20EFAX). power on again, i got disk 4 sync message, but couldn't get in to the frontview, i thought it may take hours to finish sync till i could get in. so I left it to do it's job. but after 4 days, it still showed disk 4 sync which i didn't think it was normal. then I powered off and powered on, this time, i was able to get in frontview but got disk 4 dead (yellow light) not redundant, the other 3 were find. I soft reboot the system and checked the disk check option, then i stucked on disk 4 sync again. powered off and on again, i could access but got 'Not redundant. A disk failure will render this volume dead.'

could anyone let me know what's the problem?

Thanks.

Re: Readynas NV+ Problem

Do you have a backup of the data?  If you don't, then make one before you try anything else.

Perhaps download the log zip file, and look at the disk health for disks 1-3 in disk_smart.log.  Also test the new WD20EFAX in a windows PC with WD's lifeguard program.  You can connect it with either SATA or a USB adapter/dock.

Re: Readynas NV+ Problem

I have download the log, seems disk 1-3 are fine. and used WD's lifeguard program to test the 'dead disk 4' and the new disk 4, both passed.

now, i hot inserted the old disk 4, front panel shows ip address and disk4 sync and i can see the readynas in raidar but couldn't access the frontview.

Re: Readynas NV+ Problem

Disk 1 is showing some errors, so you should keep an eye on it.

now, i hot inserted the old disk 4, front panel shows ip address and disk4 sync and i can see the readynas in raidar but couldn't access the frontview.

A better plan would have been to insert the new disk by itself in slot 1, then set up the NAS.  After that try powering down and move the disk to slot 4, and confirm that it boots.  That would have isolated the issue to the disk or the SATA bus in the chassis.

However, another possibility is that the NAS set the SATA interface to down, because something unusual happened on the interface.  Rebooting the NAS would clear that.

It's not unusual for Frontview to become inaccessible during a resync of an old NAS - it runs at a lower priority than the rest of the system, which is busy doing the resync.  At this point, just wait a while, and see if it comes back. Hovering over the disk in RAIDar will give you an estimate of the progress.  Note the estimated completion times are often wildly wrong, what matters here is if the sync is progressing.

Re: Readynas NV+ Problem

Thanks for the reply.

Disk 1 (WD RED) is about 1 years old, how come has error already? while the other 2 (WD GREEN) still fine for years.

I have tried what you siad. New disk in slot 1 boots ok, and moved to slot 4 no problem too.

So what should I do now? put 3 disks back and insert new disk to slot 4?

So both slots are working, and the disk is ok.

I'd put the three disks back in, and make a backup.  The try hot-inserting disk 4 again.

Re: Readynas NV+ Problem

I put 3 disks in and hot inserted disk 4, front panel shows

ip address

disk 4 sync

5 hours passed, still no change, cannot access frontview. and raidar shows as attachement

but that disk 4 not the one i inserted, it is the old one.

This is the same error you had with the new disk?  If so, pull the disk, and download the log zip file.  Send a PM to the mods ( @JohnCM_S or @Marc_V ) asking to review the log zip file (with a downloadable link to it).  Don't post the link publicly.  You send a private message by clicking on the envelope icon in the upper right of the forum page.

You might also try testing the disk again with lifeguard - this time using the full erase option (which is one of the advanced options).  This sometimes catches disk issues that the other tests miss.

Re: Readynas NV+ Problem

Thanks. I just had a time to test the new disk again via lifegurad.

tird both quick and extended test both failed as too many errors. does mean it is a faulty disk? but when i first runned the quick test a few days ago, it did pass. so i am not sure it is the faulty one of nas ruined it?

Re: Readynas NV+ Problem

The quick test only accesses a small portion of the drive, so it could easilly fail to detect certain problems.  The long test does more, and a RAID sync accesses the entire drive.  If the drive had problems in sectors not accessed by your previous testing, the RAID sync would have brought them to the forefront.  And now, the test sees those errors logged and fails.

Yes.  The NAS didn't ruin it.  The quick test isn't enough to test the drive.

Exchange it with the seller, as Western Digital will give you a recertified replacement (not a new drive).

i have swapped a seagate ironwolf. but forgot to export the log before putting it in. now it starts sync and again i cannot access raider and frontview. i guess i will be patient this time to wait a few more days.

how long it supposes to be to sync 2TB disk? the other 2TBx3 disks are almost full.

It's been a long time since I needed to sync on my NV+, so I don't recall how long.

But it syncs every sector (whether full or empty).  The process involves 8 TB of disk i/o, so it can take a while.

You should see some progress with RAIDar (hover the mouse over the disks or volume) - so maybe try that if you can't access frontview yet.

Can you ping it?

Are you seeing resync progress on the LCD panel?

It's been 2 days?  It normally doesn't take that long, and normally you can access frontview during the process.  I am wondering if you are running into issues with one of the other disks.

You could wait a bit longer I guess.

I suggested a backup earlier - do you have one?

Re: Readynas NV+ Problem

No. no back up. no very important data. so it's ok.

nas runs well with other 3 disks, once insert 4th one, it's unaccessable. but single 4th disk runs well.

so, i don't get it now. do you suggest wait or check all disks and do a fully factory reset?

Not much point in waiting longer.  I'd start by checking all the disks (using the long read test), since I don't think we're ruled out an issue on them.

It's also possible that it's a failing PSU (unable to power all four disks adequately).  Though it might also be a memory issue that is only showing up during the resync. Might be worth running the memory test from the boot menu if the disks check out.
