Ultra 6 (RND-6B) and Hitachi Drives

I just purchase a NEW ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (why I got Netgear again, I have no idea).

The first unit I received had a defective fan, so I had to return that unit. THis unit will not boot (also the first unit did this same thing).

The drives I'm using are Hitachi 3TB drives. Model HDS5C3030ALA630. I confirmed they are on the HCL list.

When I insert these drives and turn the NAS on, it just sits at the ReadyNAS label on the OLED screen. It never boots. I tried pulling all the disks, and it starts to boot. I put one disk in, and it just sits there. I tried a seagate drive, and was able to get the unit to boot so I could ugprade the firmware to 4.2.19.

However, it will not do anything with these Hitachi drives. No matter what configuration I use (single, double, all six, etc). Can someone point me to something I may be missing?

Thanks.

The OS is stored on the drives. So, when you boot there isn't any OS to boot into.

You need to do a factory default with the Hitachi drives in place. This will install the OS on the drives. This will also wipe any data on the drives so make sure you have the correct drives in place.

Was the Seagate from another ReadyNAS? I'm curious how that one booted.

Re: Ultra 6 (RND-6B) and Hitachi Drives

I wasn't clear in my first post. I took the Seagate, installed in the ReadyNAS and did a factory reset. It installed the OS, and then when it was up, I ran the update wizard to bring the box up to 4.2.19. After that, I powered down, put the Hitachi drives in there and it just won't boot.

I tried a factory boot with the Hitachi drives, but I cannot get to the boot menu. It just sits there displaying ReadyNAS on the front screen. Never moves from there. I tried this with one drive, two drives and all six drives. No luck.

What happens if you put the seagate back in?

Re: Ultra 6 (RND-6B) and Hitachi Drives

First of all, yes the HDS53030ALA630 are on the HCL, and I have 4 in service, two each in two ReadyNAS NVX units. If you put one in and begin the boot process, either the drive or the chassis is at fault. I would either try all six one at a time for an initial boot, or test each of the six drives one at a time with the vendor tools.

Are these the same six drives that were in the previous unit?

You might also open a Tech Support case as a follow on to the RMA since there is apparently some sort of a problem, but of course they will ask you to test the drives as well.
