Nighthawk AC2600 Dropping Connection Randomly
Hardware Version | AC2600 |
Firmware Version | V1.2.0.90_1.0.1 |
GUI Language Version | V1.2.0.70 |
Over the past 3 months or so, my internet connection will completely die for about 30 minutes at a time. If I manually reboot the AC2600 it'll come back immediately. I have a Grafana dashboard that'll try to ping a couple of sites every 15 seconds, and it seems to happen most often at night and every 2-3 days, but it has happened around 8-10pm EDT 3 times this past week. The issue doesn't appear to be connected to a specific firmware version, I had noticed it on 1.2.0.88 (several month after the upgrade) and upgrading or rolling back hasn't fixed it thus far.
My ISP modem is a Technicolor CGM4140COM running version CGM4140COM_4.11p7s1_PROD_sey.
According to my ISP (and this seems to be the case in my testing), the secondary ethernet port on the modem is active even in bridge mode and can give off a second IP and connection. I temporarily setup a connection with the secondary port for testing purposes, and it does seem like that connection will remain active and working when the one through the AC2600 dies, which leads me to think it's an issue with the AC2600 itself.

Re: Nighthawk AC2600 Dropping Connection Randomly
I've seen a lot of isp supplied modem/router combo devices that didn't function properly in passthrough mode. The 2nd port working makes me suspicious as most isp's only allow 1 public ip address.
Try leaving the technicolor in router mode (disable its wifi) and either put the netgears ip address into its dmz or put the netgear in access point mode.

Re: Nighthawk AC2600 Dropping Connection Randomly
Yeah, I was quite confused when the technician told me the second port was still active. Looking at the modem's status page, there's a "Associate Ethernet Port 2 to HOME SECURITY Network" entry checked off that I don't remember being checked off before. Google seems to suggest it's part of some extra security system package that needs to be separated from the rest of the network.
I tried switching the Technicolor back to router mode and DMZ-ing the Netgear for now, so hopefully that solves the issue, but I guess I'll have to see if the connection drops over the next few days.
But holy cow configuring the Technicolor is insane. Instead of going through the router page you have configure them through an ISP page instead and even with DMZ setup through there, port 80 and 443 are always internally handled by the Technicolor unless you explicitly forward them to something else. But then the only things you can select on the port forward screen are WiFi connected devices, which the Netgear clearly is not. 😵

Re: Nighthawk AC2600 Dropping Connection Randomly
Unfortunately I did just go through another connection drop with the Technicolor in router mode and the DMZ setup for the Netgear...
