Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues

I have the latest Firmware.
I have 1 GB internet at my ISP Modem-- tested at the modem. As soon as it goes through the router it drops to 220-250 MB download. Why is the Nighthawk reducing the speed? This is tested right on the router.
I don't see why it is being reduced. I don't have any settings in the modem that should throttle it back.
Anyone have any ideas?

Hi All,
I purchased a Nighthawk AXE7800 RAXE300 and transferred the configuration and bingo! 1GB download speed that I pay for, no problem. It was a great pick. Happy to share that. It also allows me to go up to 2.5 GB incoming download speed in the future.
So it confirmed that my R8000 had either firmware problems or hardware problems and was end of life.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
"tested right on the router" Do you mean over wireless?
Test its wired speed. That router is 10 years old. It isn't going to max out gigabit over wireless. Might hit 400-500mbps if you're right next to it and are running a decent device.
also, if you just upgrade, factory reset and reinstall the router. Make sure to leave qos, access control, traffic monitoring, and parental controls all disabled.
what modem is it connected to?

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
All tests done wired. I don't do any speed tests on wifi.
All those settings have always been disabled
It is connected to a shaw modem.
with the ISP we tested on the model at 1 GB -- plugged directly in
Plugged directly into the router -- top is 250MB
Already did a reset and made not difference.

Maybe, but how did you check that?
Don't rely on an app or a web browser and the graphical user interface to get it right.
The only reliable guide is the version number.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
Most recent firmware: V1.0.5.88_10.1.88
I also downloaded and manually updated it to be sure.

You tested after a factory reset without changing anything? directly from the router in its default configuration?

Yes there was no point in taking the time to reconfigure it if it made not difference.

Try enabling ipv5?
What site are you using for testing?
What device are you testing on?

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
What is the model number of the Shaw modem?
Does not matter, and I would have to get that and I am not climbing up into my wiring closet to get that at this time. ISP tested with their direct meters on the Coax, on the Modem and on the router. The Coax and modem tests were exactly the same and then dropped on the router. Consist with the tests I ran on my laptop on multiple speed test.
Are you using the Ookla stand alone measurement tool?
No through the website, and we used 2 or 3 different speed test sites and compared to his direct monitoring tool. The only speed tests that were below the others was on the router.
Are you testing on a Windows device or what -- monitoring tool and then on windows laptop. Our testing matched on the direct connect and modem. Routers speed degradation was consistent with my laptop and their monitoring tools.

IPv6 is disabled currently.
What option under IPv6 would be suggested?

I cannot see the image you inserted because a moderator has not approved it for viewing. If you attach an image, moderator approval is not necessary.
Check to see if you have an IPv6 option for DHCP, obtain from your ISP.
On your Windows machine, check the profile for your network. Should be Private as opposed to Public.
See attached image from Windows 10.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
We did not have speed issues with this router until about the last year or so.
I don't have time messing around with issues with Netgear.
I may just go get a different router, as I don't have time to debug netgear's problems.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
I am an IT CTO,
I have a private network and this has NEVER been a problem until recent updates from netgear.
I don't have time to debug issues with Netgear Routers.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
thanks for your ideas and help
It seems to me that maybe this router is at end of life and needs to be replaced with something that can handle the faster speeds.
anyone recommend a new Netgear that maximizes throughput speeds and streaming

It does matter if you want informed answers. Otherwise all is guesswork.
If you can access its interface, maybe that will give you some clues.

The R8000 dates from 2015. Pretty old as far as wifi standards go.

That will depends on the modem that feeds the router and many other factors. No router can give you wired speeds faster than the modem delivers.
In general, there's not a lot to be gained by changing routers.Unless you have one of those superfast services that can exceed the 1000 Mbps Ethernet of the R8000.
What you will get is better wifi and lots of extra features that may or may not be useful. You may also lose things like the ability to use USB and ReadySHARE.
Try plugging your needs into the filters on the product pages:
Wireless Routers for Home | NETGEAR
Then check back here for reports on the things you are considering, but remember that people turn up in this community with problems, not compliments. So look at reviews on Amazon, for example.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
Hello,
The picture of the modem label is attached.
I have the option with this modem to throttle up to 2 GB. It currently tests with my laptop and the Shaw ISP Tech meter device at over 1 GB
Then the router test drops it to about 250 MB (testing with my laptop and the Shaw Tech meter.
All are wired
I think the router is just too old and I need to look to upgrade it for the faster throughput for my server, office, stream for video conferences and teaching etc.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
I will look at it. This is a work environment, with business internet. I don't use the router for WIFI and we are talking wired speeds at the router. the WIFI is run off GB switches off the network not the router. My concern is the lack of WIRED speed coming out of the router.
I will look at the models but was really looking for some recommendations on models that someone has tested.

"Throttle up to" is an odd way to put it. That term is usually there to describe reducing the output.
If the modem can deliver 2 GB then your router cannot handle that.
But can you get that into the modem? What does the cable service promise to deliver?
According to the specs for your "modem" it is actually a modem/router. The label you posted even says that it has a "default wifi network".
That is why we ask what may seem like you to be a pointless question. Far from it.
So what is the R8000 in there for?
You said earlier that your Internet service is at 1000 Mbps. That will push the R8000 to its limits. But I would expect the router to deliver >900 Mbps.
Perhaps this is down to the R8000 getting in the way. You seem to have two routers in a line. That is a recipe for problems.

So what is the R8000 doing in there? And what are these GB switches. What does the wifi come from?
As generally understood, switches do not deliver wifi. They are often "dumb" devices that let you add several devices to the network that feeds back to the router.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
Hi there,
I am paying for 1 GB service and the modem is set there, and the modem tested at that level both on their meter and my laptop. If I wanted it could be increased up to 2 GB but that would be beyond the router. The router however does not deliver 1 GB that is being paid for, it delivers between 220 and 250 MB when direct tested with the same devices used to test the modem.
The router is disabled on the modem (and has always been disabled) because I have my own router to manage the network.
The modem does not deliver WIFI, nor does the router. I have WIFI AP on the network running from the GB Switches. I am not worried about the WIFI speed it is acceptable. We are concerned about the wired speed not being what it we pay for and expect.
thoughts? I am thinking I need a new one -- but I was hoping to hear some successes with some models here.

Re: Nighthawk X6 R8000 GB Speed issues
Last time I had my R8000 online I was able to get around 900Mpbs over the wire. Something to take note of as I saw with mine, Circle/SPC, Access Controls and Traffic Meter features seem to impact performances on this model router. So I was sure I didn't enable them after doing a factory reset and setup from scratch.

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-Wi-Fi-5-AC-Routers/Nighthawk-X6-R8000-not-getting-gigabit...
Wireless speed on this model router should only see about 300-500Mpbs on 5Ghz AC and is typical max speed for 2x2 MIMO devices.
