I got a notice my firmware for my R7000 needed an update, but checking with my devices webpage, it says there is no update available, even though I am running 1.0.9....
Firmware Version
V1.0.9.88_10.2.88
How do I get this fixed?
I don't want to put another #$%# app on my phone.
Also, the firmware update zip file I downloaded shows "shard" files????? Is that right?
If I brick this thing there will be no end of "heck" to pay.

Your device is 3 firmware upgrades behind going by the firmware update you have referenced. The latest firmware is:
https://kb.netgear.com/000062418/R7000-Firmware-Version-1-0-11-110
You can also download the appropriate manual for your router:
https://www.netgear.com/support/product/R7000.aspx#docs
It's well documented that the check firmware function isn't accurate and will tell you there isn't a firmware update when there is. Why Netgear don't get their firmware developers to sort this out, is anyone's guess.

You are assuming Netgear has firmware developers. If they did the firmware would not be in the mess it is. Last I knew it was done by a 3rd party. No one seems to care to do QA, etc. Sold my Netgear routers after no good firmware in site.
Yes more then one file in zip is correct. In order to prevent a bad flash of the firmware read in the manual about doing a manual update with PC Ethernet connected to router. Doing over wireless or with app is asking for problems.

Probably. Which "the firmware update zip file" was that? What,
exactly, was in it?
"shard" is a double translation of "fragment"?
Don't be misled by what your operating system says when it sees
".chk" (or ".img"). Following the instructions in the router
documentation tends to work better.
