Re: R7000 Firmware update

You don't open the chk file, you flash it. Go to http://routerlogin.net or http://192.168.1.1 and in the Advanced settings you can flash it. (Advanced -> Administration -> Firmware Update)

@microchip8 is right. you don't open the file. Follow the guide microchip8 wrote or follow the netgear manual update process.

Re: R7000 Firmware update

@yynsums  This is where the importance of reading your product manual and familiarising yourself with your kit, is most important.

Updating firmware really is very easy, as long as you can follow basic instructions. After downloading the Zip file, extract it to your desktop. One file will be the release notes which you can ignore, the other will be the .chk file. The process shouldn't take any longer than 5 minutes from start to finish. I highly advise you carry out any firmware updates via ethernet rather than WiFi. And don't be tempted to interrupt the process whilst it's carrying out the firmware update. Once you've uploaded the file to the router, just let it do its thing. It will auto reboot once it's done. Don't even be tempted to look at the LED lights on the router itself because even that sometimes causes folks to panic thinking nothing is happening. If you interrupt the process, there's the risk of bricking the router, so leave it to do its thing.

If you want the official line, that is actually a link to Neatgear's own guidance on the process:
