R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

This evening my Nighthawk R7000P suddenly stopped working, it has a solid amber power button that persists indefinitely. None of the other LEDs are lit except for the WiFi radio LED, which is a solid white. Sometimes it will act as if in a boot loop, with all the LEDs coming on at once for a moment, but then going back to the solid amber power light. I apologize if this isn't much information to go on, but I'm new at this. What could the problem be? What steps might I take?

Re: R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

You can try recoving it with tftp or nmrpflash.

are you on windows? if so, follow this guide

https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP

just make sure you enable tftp

https://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-tftp-windows-10

and here's a video walk through using a tftp client. Use the built in one for windows 10 though. the video is more of an example of how its done.

and if that doesn't work, you can try using nmrpflash

Re: R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

The TFTP method was unsuccessful because I couldn't get the router into the "ready" state the guide describes with the flashing power button. I was able to successfully use nmrpflash however, but the problem persists. The router won't even respond to the reset button, even an attempt at a factory reset.

try using nmrpflash to flash an older firmware.

Re: R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

How much older? I've tried with both the 1.3.3.142 and the 1.3.3.140 so far.

Re: R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

I've tried with multiple older versions of the firmware, all the way back to 1.0.0.44, and the problem seems to persist.

could be a hardware failure. How old is it?

Still within warranty?

Re: R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

I purchased it one year and one month ago, to the day, so it's exactly one month out of warranty.

Re: R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

I think I've identified the problem. I found another user experiencing a similar issue with the solid amber power light, and they mentioned that it was a problem with the power supply. On investigating with my multimeter, I found that the power supply was faulty. On further investigation, I discovered that the power supply that had shipped with my router did not have the required output listed on the back of the router itself. It supplied 1.5 Amps at 12 Volts, and the router lists a requirement of 3 Amps at 12 Volts on the back. It worked fine until now, which leads me to conclude that the adapter must have worked fine for normal use, but has finally failed because of the excess current being drawn. Using a universal adapter supplying 2 Amps at 12 Volts, I was able to boot the router successfully.

Now, if I contact Netgear support about this, will they supply me with the correct adapter even though my rotuer is no longer under warranty?

Re: R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

No. netgear doesn't sell replacement power supplies.

It might have gotten swapped with your modem. I've seen that happen.

You can use a power supply with MORE amps but less will cause instability.

so maybe during a prior move/power off/something, maybe they got swapped.

Re: R7000P Suddenly Stopped Working

They weren't swapped. The power supply is labeled "Netgear" and our modem is of a dfferent brand. It's definitely the power supply that was sold with our router.
