Re: R8000 - Have to load every page 2x after installing V1.0.4.74_10.1.80
I've noticed some users have had luck with the latest firmware if they're running IPv6.
seems like windows might be defaulting to IPv6 connections first and if that doesn't work to then go back to IPv4. Thats why the refreshing/reloading works for some.

The bug has hit several models. Some people have certainly heard of fixes because they are testing beta firmware that appears to mend things.
There are several conversations going on about the problem. So that news might not have reached this one.
It does seem to be taking rather a long time to get fixed.

Re: R8000 - Have to load every page 2x after installing V1.0.4.74_10.1.80
that is the firmware version I have been using for last two months, ending in 75, I tried everything to get version 80 or 82 to work and nothing worked , factory reset, and only thing that worked was roll back to version 75 , but if you change ipv4 to 8888 then both versions 80 and 82 will work because you are using google servers.

Re: R8000 - Have to load every page 2x after installing V1.0.4.74_10.1.80
Started having the same exact issue after updating the firmware to V1.0.4.120_10.0.91 on my R6400 router.
The DNS workaround seems to be helping so far. Really sucks that they haven't provided a fix to it, and it somehow broke between the previous version I had loaded and this latest version.

You have to change the DNS on EVERY device and NOT the router. You also can't block port 53 which prevents someone from bypassing the router's DNS settings. If it worked on the router then openDNS would work because it's a fixed DNS IP. openDNS doesn't work and neither would Google (8.8.8.8). Just go back to ...75. Much easier and all functions work.

@Mustang_Gears rolling back the firmware is pretty easy. simply download the old firmware, extract it, and then follow the manual update process found in the manual for your device.

What you call "the site" is probably the browser graphical user interface (GUI) for the router.
Not a site as most people know it but the "control panel" for the router.
Best accessed with a wired Ethernet connection.

Re: R8000 - Have to load every page 2x after installing V1.0.4.74_10.1.80
I downloaded the previously released version of the firmware, and the issue is still there. There were a ton of updates and security updates in that version. If I go back 2 versions, I worry about the security issues. Seems to me Netgear has an obligation to fix this very annoying bug. Otherwise, it's time to switch to Belkin.

NG is aware of the issue. You'll need to revert back to FW version what works for you. Otherwise, you'll need to wait for NG to upate FW.

Considering it's been an issue now for months, across multiple firmware updates and multiple devices, I'd say they better get on it! Otherwise, I, for one, will be switching to a different manufacturer.

NG doesn't make it known if or when new FW is forth coming. So you'll need to revert FW versions, wait or move on to something else.
Good Luck.

Re: R8000 - Have to load every page 2x after installing V1.0.4.74_10.1.80
Maybe this will help:
Goto https://www.netgear.com/support/product/r8000.aspx#Firmware%20Version%201.0.4.68
Look for "Downloads"
Select the "+" for previous versions and select 1.0.4.68 (this is the latest stable version)
select "download"
Now log into the admin settings for the R8000 router. (usually http://192.168.1.1/start.htm)
Select Advanced | Administrations | Router Update
Hit the "Browse" button to locate the file you downloaded from above then hit "Update". It will do the rest.
I have never needed to do a factory reset and always had the settings saved.

Re: R8000 - Have to load every page 2x after installing V1.0.4.74_10.1.80
I've been plagued by this problem on my R8500 (FW V1.0.2.154_1.0.102) for months now, and it finally got annoying enough to investigate. I was happy to find the forum complaints but disappointed there's no firmware update yet. I picked this thread to reply since it has the most posts on the topic.
My problem was worst with Chrome on my work laptop, but recently seems to have affected other browsers and devices.
I rolled back to the V1.0.2.144_1.0.99 firmware, and so far - so good, with no DNS errors.
Here are two benchmarks to illustrate the problem:
- DNSBench reported "DNS queries are not being consistently answered" with the 154 firmware but now says "DNS services are available and working." Oddly, DNSBench didn't raise an issue with DNS reliability in its conclusion report with 154. My router was at the bottom of DNSBench's response time list but is now near the top.
- Namebench reported 111 ms average, 631 ms max with 7 NX (non-existant domains) on 154. Now I'm at 15 ms avg, 280 ms max, and no NX. This agrees with DNSBench, and my internet just feels "snappier."
So my questions are around what to do now.
- I'm well out of warranty on this router. How do I get Netgear's attention and the possibility of trying a beta? I don't like rolling back to an older version with a security vulnerability.
- Is the competition (especially TP-Link and Asus) markedly better with things of this sort? I'm kinda fed-up with Netgear creating problems like this, not giving any sort of announcement or work-around, not relasing a quick fix, etc. I've also had a couple of Netgear routers that just started polluting my network or acting funny after a few years. It is also annoying that I can't set my router to give out other DNS servers to DHCP clients - my only option is to set each client manually.

The 1.0.4.68 firmware download version has the ...75 file in it. It's confusing. Open the zip file and you'll see it in there.

Re: R8000 - Have to load every page 2x after installing V1.0.4.74_10.1.80
I see R8500-V1.0.2.156_1.0.105 was released with a 11/5/2021 date.
Anyone tried it yet and know if it still has the "DNS probe" bug?
Like many Netgear router owners, I had initially updated to the firmware release from late summer (R8500-V1.0.2.154_1.0.102) only to immediately start having the very annoying DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN errors and thus after a few days reverted back to the previous firmware release. There are several threads on this forum site for the DNS errors for all different router models and a few suggest that Netgear support has been working on a fix for the past month or so.

Same issue. I've got a house full of leviton devices that randomly disconnect now because of this. Going back and adjusting DNS settings on all devices is not an option. This will be my last netgear purchase.

The solution was this:
Or revert FW back to what was working.
