i have downloaded the firmware version i want and unzipped the file which saves it to my computer as an IMG just like the website says (pic1)
then when i start the upgrade i get and error which states it has the wrong file type.(pic 2)
Any suggestions please?

Are you sure you have a D7000 and NOT a D7000 V2? The V2 requires a .CHK file.
See https://www.netgear.com/support/product/D7000v2.aspx#Firmware%20Version%201.0.0.52 for firmware if you do have a V2 version of the D7000.
