Unable to connect to the internet through a router I bought on craigslist

I bought it yesterday after finding it on craigslist. Installed the all three antennas, hooked it up to my modem and I tried resetting it both on and off. The routers lights indicated a proper internet connection (power on, internet on, 2.4GHz on, 5GHz on, port 1 on, port 2 on, and the last two on the far right were on). The problem started when I entered the exact password that it came with. My pc said it was incorrect. I restarted my pc and my phone and both came out with the same issue. Does the router have a different password? Should I ask the seller if he changed it?

   "it" being this?:

(Look for "Model" om the product label.)  Firmware version?  What is
your (unspecified) "my modem"?

> [...] and I tried resetting it both on and off. [...]

I don't know what that means.  "tried"?  How, exactly?  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

You seem to have skipped a crucial step:

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look for
"Factory Settings" as well as the LED descriptions and the basic set-up
instructions.  Look also for "Troubleshoot".

> [...] internet on [...]

Note that "on" is not a very precise description of a color.

Does that mean that whatever your problem might be, it is related to
getting a device connected wirelessly to your router, and not getting
your router connected to your ISP?

> [...] The problem started when I entered the exact password that it
> came with. [...]

_Which_ "the exact password"?  You "entered" what, exactly, into
what, exactly?  Look for "Types of Logins" in the User Manual.

> [...] Does the router have a different password?

   "different" from _what_?

> [...] Should I ask the seller if he changed it?

If you do a settings reset as described in the User Manual, then
whatever the previous owner did should matter little.

Further reading in the User Manual might not hurt, either.

Re: Unable to connect to the internet through a router I bought on craigslist

Yes, that is the router I am referring to.

I assume you are asking about my modem. It is an Arris Surfboard SB6183, which I connected to the modem via ethernet.

I followed and executed all the steps for the "factory reset". Sorry, I have never done this before and I'm quite frustrated about the whole thing. I'll try to be as specific as I can.

After connecting my router to the power supply, I waited for my router to startup. Based on the layout of the icons under the light indicators (left to right), I had the following: white, white, white, white, off, off, off, off, off, off, white, white. Some of them were blinking but I don't remember which ones. No amber lights.

I checked for WIFI networks on my PC. The name that shows up for my router is NETGEAR85 and NETGEAR85-5G. I entered the password that originally came with the router. Ended up with "The network security key isn't correct..."

I then realized that I could download the "Nighthawk" app for my phone so I installed the app in an attempt to resolve the issue from my phone. I signed up. The app secured the phone's connection to the router. However it failed to check for firmware updates. All I remember from the page was "Firmware Error", clicked retry and it was the same issue. So I have no idea where the problem is at. Does it need a firmware update? If so, how do I update the firmware without a wifi connection through the router? I'm not sure where in the user's manual should I refer to. Let alone the troubleshoot section.

Your situation exactly same mine....
First at all you need to download the app Netgear Nighthawk from your mobile or PC then register new account then install model number, series number, and password.
It's working perfectly. Good luck.

What were those steps?  How many steps are there beyond "press the
button for several seconds"?  Did the LEDs do interesting things when
you did whatever you did?

As you can see in the User Manual, these LEDs have identifying icons
and names.  It would help if you used them.

   I'd believe the message.

"My car won't start, so I attached a trailer to it"?

I'd forget any Netgear-supplied app, and stick with a web browser.

Apparently, you don't know the current wireless-network passphrase.

> [...] Does it need a firmware update? [...]

It might, but that wouldn't help you with the lost/wrong
wireless-network passphrase.

If you can't get the default wireless-network passphrase to work (for
either SSID), then you might try using a computer with a wired
(Ethernet) connection (where no wireless-network passphrase is
required).

The ARRIS SB6183 is a _modem_, not a modem+router.  By itself, it has
no "wifi".

Registration is not necessary to setup a router. Nor is using a mobile device and Nighthawk app the best way to go about it. There is no Nighthawk app for a PC.

Registration is just for 90-day support to help you set the thing up and for the warranty support, although even there registration is not required under law.

While Netgear wants everyone to use an app for set up, experienced users prefer doing it with the browser graphical user interface (GUI) with a wired connection between a PC and the router.

Visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

and feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

It will also have any software, firmware and drivers for your device.

Begin with the Quick Start/Installation Guide.

Antinode, you're not helping me at all.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the idea. (You are by no means the first to complain about that and probably won't be the last.)

But don't give up. Let's backtrack to where we came in:

The problem started when I entered the exact password that it came with. My pc said it was incorrect. I restarted my pc and my phone and both came out with the same issue. Does the router have a different password? Should I ask the seller if he changed it?

How were you connected to the router? Wifi or wired?

I ask because there are separate passwords for wifi and wired access.

The best way in is with a wired LAN link between PC and router. (No wifi password needed.) And then use the browser graphical user interface (GUI).

With wifi you have to connect to that before you can connect to the router.

Each step needs a different password. Both have default settings that are on a label on the thing.

Connect to the wifi with the complicated SSID and password on the label and then to the router's controls with that password.

If you did a reset, then the seller's settings have gone with the wind:

How do I perform a factory reset on my NETGEAR router? | Answer | NETGEAR Support

Talk of using a phone suggests wifi. Is that with a mobile app of some sort? (YOu can also use a phone to get straight into the GUI.

I posted an earlier message with links to documentation. That is actually a good place to start.

Just take things slowly a step at a time. If something goes wrong, make a note of what you did, what messages you saw, and where you saw them. Report back and there should be a way forward.

Re: Unable to connect to the internet through a router I bought on craigslist

Hi there I got your message. Okay let's me explain for you, the router you brought on Craigslist it means the previous owner they already login and changed the password. You have to RESET get back the original factory default, reset button at the back of router very tiny whole get the pin and hold around 40 up to 60 second  no more white LED light only light from POWER ( yellow) . Okay step by step:

1- download the free genie app from www.NETGEAR.com/genie. ( From your mobile or PC)

2- Log-in to the router: Launch a web browser NETGEAR genie display or you can go to www.routerlogin.net enter ADMIN for user name and enter PASSWORD ( from factory)

3- Connect router to modem by cable remember yellow internet port of router

4- Power on for both router and modem wait until white LED light from router is ready

5- Check your mobile or PC which one first time you Log-in and you will see WiFi Netgear 85 then inter password.

6- Well-done
