V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware blocking NTP?

I noticed a new issue last week after updating my R7000 to firmware version V1.0.11.126_10.2.112.  Eventually the R7000 seems to block devices on my LAN from accessing NTP servers on the internet.  Initially I thought there was an issue with the time server to which my Mac was pointed, but I coudn't get the time to synchronize with any NTP server.  I also thought there might be an issue with my OS, but discovered that once I rebooted my R7000, NTP immediately started working normally.  A day later, the problem was back and, once again, a reboot of my R7000 immediately resolved the problem.  I've repeated this process maybe 4 times.

I downgraded the router to firmware version R7000-V1.0.11.122_10.2.100_hotfix this morning and to this point, NTP continues to work fine.  I'll give it another day before I feel confident that V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 is the culprit.  In the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone else who has updated a Nighthawk to V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 has noticed that computers or other devices on the LAN have lost time synchronization.

Re: V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware blocking NTP?

It took several more days of testing that included what appears to have been a cable modem-related hiccup to convince myself that R7000 firmware version V1.0.11.128_10.2.112 doesn't block NTP synchronization a day or two after installation/router reboot.  Netgear appears to have resolved the issue that was introduced in firmware version V1-0-11-126-10-2-112.

After a day, NTP is still functioning normally with firmware version V1.0.11.122_10.2.100_hotfix installed on my R7000.  I'll let it ride another day, then reinstall the latest V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware to confirm that it is, indeed, the culprit in the failure of NTP.

Yes I was having an issue when updated to the 126 firmware. I am downgrading to the version you did to see if that helps as well. Please post back if your issue resolves. (I had to search manually for the 122 hot fix firmware it does not come up in the main support page on net gear for this model odd)

Re: V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware blocking NTP?

I suspect that once a hotfix is replaced by a final firmware update version, Netgear hides the hotfix.

Jsettle, was your issue with V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 related to network time protocol (NTP) or something else?

A couple days after downgrading to firmware V1.0.11.122_10.2.100_hotfix, I was still having no issues with NTP synchronization, so I reinstalled V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 this morning.   To this point, NTP continues to work, but I think it may have taken some time to fail after the previous upgrade to V1.0.11.126_10.2.112, so I'll continue to check and report back.

Re: V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware blocking NTP?

Roughly 24 hours after reinstalling firmware V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 on my R7000, the NTP client running on my Mac is once again failing to synchronize with any time servers.  I am confident at this point that firmware revision V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 is the source of the problem.

Hopefully Netgear will arrive at a fix and push out a new firmware update for the R7000 sometime soon. Given that time of day is often tied fairly tightly to security, this has the potential to cause quite a few issues for users as systems lose time synchronization.

Re: V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware blocking NTP?

Do members of the Netgear tech support staff follow community threads?  If not, what is the most effective way to reach out to them if you're using a router that is no longer under warranty?

Somewhat,  but they have been of little help.

There have been DNS issues in the latest FW releases of some routers . This may cause issues with NTP server resolution.  Can you change to IP based servers to see if the issue goes away.

Pay?  I do not know of any other way.

I believe I tried referencing at least one NTP server by IP rather than host name as I was trying to resolve the problem, but I can circle back and confirm.  For what it's worth, I havn't noticed any other DNS-related issues, but will make a mental note to keep an eye out for them.

That's discouraging, but I was leaning toward that conclusion, as well.

I re-upgraded to the V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware, waited a day, noted that NTP had stopped synchronizing, as was the case previously, tried plugging in the IP addresses rather than the host names of a couple of the NTP servers that I use reguarly, but no go.  NTP wouldn't synchronize with the servers.  I re-downgraded to version V1.0.11.122_10.2.100_hotfix and NTP was able to synchronize immediately after the R7000 booted.  I'll be stuck at V1.0.11.122_10.2.100_hotfix until Netgear comes up with a fix.  I'm guessing I shouldn't hold my breath while waiting.

Re: V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware blocking NTP?

I noticed this morning that firmware version V1.0.11.128_10.2.112 was released last week for the R7000.  I pushed the update out to my R7000 a few minutes ago.  NTP was able to synchronize with no issues once the router rebooted, but that was also the case after I upgraded my router to firmware version R7000-V1.0.11.126_10.2.112.  I will try to remember to check NTP again tomorrow to see if it is still able to synchronize with a time server.  Fingers crossed.

After 24 hours, a Mac on my LAN is still able to synchronize time via NTP.  At least tentatively, R7000 firmware version V1.0.11.128_10.2.112 seems to have resolved this issue.  Will check for synchronization again tomorrow morning before delcaring the problem resolved.

Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Re: V1.0.11.126_10.2.112 firmware blocking NTP?

Honestly, I'm not sure I've ever had to reset one of the numerous Netgear routers I've used over many years, but that's good advice.  I always keep a relatively recent configuration backup on hand just in case.
