Will pairing R7450 with EAX20 extender yield better wifi coverage than pairing with EX7000?

In other word: Do I need to have an AX-equipped device to see an improvement in Wi-Fi range when swapping out an EX7000 (AC1900) range extender for an EAX20 (AX1800)? The wifi signal from the router must pass through two exterior walls to reach inside my detached garage.

No.
Signal broadcast power wasn't increased with the AX spec.
So routers/extenders aren't broadcasting any further. Because of the increased speed, they can do a little better with reduced signal.
You'd be better off to invest the money in a hardwired connection between the 2 points
