Visit the support pages:

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.
Look for the model number on the label on the device.
Begin with the Quick Start/Installation Guide.
According to the manual, the dst6501 "Requires Nighthawk R7300 DST Router".

The Nighthawk router has gone bad and i have replaced it with a Arris SBG8300 modem, and now i am trying to figure out how i can connect this Netgear DST6501 extender to the new modem, Any help you can provide will be great.

Without knowing much on the combo, looking at the R7300DST backpanel with it's direct AC port and the DST6501 direct wall power design does kinda indicating these devices were using Powerline communication.
Checking the R7300DST user manual does confirm this in Chapter 13, "DST Adapter Troubleshooting" :

You can take various steps to diagnose and solve problems that you might encounter.
The first step in troubleshooting your DST adapter is to check the LEDs. After you plug in the
DST adapter, the following sequence of events occurs:
1. The Power LED lights.
2. After approximately 10 seconds, verify the following:
• The Power LED is solid green. The device is powered on.
• If the device is connected to a Powerline network, the Pick A Plug LED is lit.
• If the Powerline device is connected through the Ethernet port to a powered-on
Ethernet device, the Ethernet LED is lit.
