cannot close ports 21 and 443 on r7000 router
my nighthawk r7000 router is running firmware v1.0.6.28_1.1.83 and i am comcerned with the security of my network since ports 21 (ftp) and 443 (https) are both always opened for exploits. these results i am referring to are online scan from gibson research's shield up utility.
i have closed port forwarding within the router management to no avail. and this is only the first 1056 ports scanned.
AWESOME! that did it!
just down graded to firmware v1.0.5.64_1.188
rebooted unit and wah-lah...port 21 (FTP) is closed to shields up port scanner.
Thanks!

Go to ADVANCED > USB Functions > ReadySHARE Storage and disable FTP and HTTPS (via Internet).

port 21 is still open after applying changes you recommended.

port 21 is still open, after applying changes instructed.
port 21 is still open even after disabling ftp and https in readyshare usb functions.
Do you have UPnP enabled? If so, disable it. Reboot the router.
- Is this r7000 broken? Or are all netgear router open for exploits?
I have not seen any one else with your problem. Can you try a different port scanner to cross check the results from gibson's research?
Last thing to try is a factory reset.
- I don't think grc gibson research's shields up is the problem. I am running netgear's firmware. Maybe i should try firmwares from shibby.
No disrespect intended here.I just noticed that you are are running v1.0.6.28_1.1.83. It's been recalled due to bugs. You should downgrade to 1.0.5.64. Get it here. It's strongly recommended for you to perform a factory reset after installation and reconfigure by hand. Do not restore from a backup file because it could be incompatible.
There are several, great 3rd party firmware options for the R7000. I use Asuswrt-Merlin.
