AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satellite

I just bought a AX6000/RBK852 (RBK850/RBS850) with the lattest firwmare V3.2.16.6.

I have a lan cable connected between my main and the satellite (wired backhaul mode). I have a guest network too. When wireless devices are connected to the guest network through the satellite, internet is not working on them. Once I remove the cable so that there is no more wired backhaul mode anymore (just the normal wireless backhaul), internet is working on devices connected to the satellite as expected.

Wireles devices connected to the guest network on the main unit are working OK.

This has been already documented here https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-AX/RBK53-Guest-Network-No-Internet-and-missing-checkboxes/td-p...

Basically the guest network is not working for satellite connected by cable (wired backhaul).

I am really surprised that an issue like that had not been taken care of as it makes the guest network completely useless., working only around the main router unit.

Am I doing something wrong or is it a big bug ?

Thanks

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

I finally updated to v3.2.17.12.

After a reboot (exactly 2 reboot of the RBR as for some reason there was no internet connection during the first reboot and one reboot of the RBS), guest network is working correctly with the satellite in Wired Backhaul mode.

I did not need to do factory reset / reload my configuration.

Finally Netgear was able after 6 months to fix this basic function.

I wrote to the support desk to tell them the issue was solved.

@FURRYe38 thanks for your help during these 6 months...

Is your system in router or AP mode? Mines in router mode and I have three devices connected to the guest network and there getting internet thru the RBS that are wired for me. I haven't tried AP mode yet.

There a switch in between the RBR and RBS? If so, what is the mfr and model#...

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

I have RBR852 with two satellites, one connected to the router via homeplug/ethernet and the other daisy chained to it. Bizarre but true: when I tried to set up g=uest network via the web interface, it wouldn't work (wouldn't pass the password to the satellites so I could never log on) but when i initialized via the ios app, it changed the name of the guest network to a standardized "xxx-Guest" where i had tried to use a different naming convention, accepted the password i had tried to put in via the web app , and initialized successfully.

I don't have the will to test, but try following strict naming convention "xxx-Guest" where xxx is the name of your regular network and then try initializing via the ios app.

What happens if you use the RBRs web page and web broswer to setup the guest network?

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

sorry that's what I meant by "web interface" - if I set up via the RBR webpage, i.e. orbilogin.com, I couldn't get the guest network to work (admittedly trying to use a guest network name of my own devising). If f I initialized it via the app, it worked, automatically changed the SSID name to the form xxx-Guest (where xxx is the name of my regular SSID) and all is fine - and the changes are reflected now accurately reflected on the RBR orbilogin.com GUI. That leads me to suspect the the actual issue was the naming of the SSID and that it expects a guest network to have the naming form xxx-Guest - in other words the only "magic" of using the ios app was that it forced an SSID name in the form that the system was expecting.

Is your system in AP or Router mode?

What is the mfr and model of the host router the RBR is connected to if in AP mode?

Ok I'm on cable. Mine in router mode. I enabled Guest Network thru the RBRs web page, I left Netgear-Guest as default SSID name and didn't enable any security. My iphone and Mac Book to which I'm typing this and posting is connected to my RBS thats wire connected...

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

I think the web/app is a red herring. I feel pretty sure the issue is the SSID and the safest thing to do is go with the default or xxx-Guest. I have security enabled and it is fine.

I have the exact same setup and problem as OP philouu. Latest firmware on router and satellites, wired Backhaul, router mode. I don’t think anyone has answered OP question.

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

The issue is that guest network works if connected to main router but not wired satellites.

I'm answering this now from guest network attached to wired satellite. Works for me if a/you use the generic suggested guest network name or b/you use a network name in the form xxx-Guest where xxx is your regular network name

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

I tried the same as well. xxx-Guest. I can sign on to guest network but have no internet connection when using satellites.

Main network works perfectly on router and wired satellites. Don’t understand why guest network does not work.

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

Dear all

Thanks for so many answers

My set up is the following

Router is RBR850 firmware 3.2.16.6

Satellite is RBS850 firmware 3.2.16.6

Fiber coming throuhg PPOE. IPV6 Pass through

Whatever backhaul (wired or wireless) the Satellite is always in good Backhaul status. When I connect with browser to the GUI of both the Router or Satellite I do not see any issue. I noticed that when I connect to the satellite GUI I see only the main network (not the guest network) whatever backhaul mode. But I always see both network with my wireless devices.

In wireless backhaul everything looks OK.

In wired backhaul devices connected to the guest network will not have internet connection but they are connected "correctly" when I look at the GUI.

I have tried

- renaming xxx-Guest

- using the IOS app to set-up the guest network

- making an unsecure network with no password

- rebooting everything

- removing IPV6

- resyncing... syncing first wireless then wired.

- I have even removed the unmanaged network switch so that there is only one single lan cable between Main and Satellite and same issue.

I am running out of option except the full factory reset.

I am really surprised that it works with some other people but obviously I am not the only with these issues.

I have wirtten a ticket to the support team too.

Thanks

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

Guest network is working for me and one other using v6 FW. RBS are wired, mine is using switches in between the RBR and RBS.

Is your RBS directly wired to the RBR or are there switche(s)in between? If so, what is the mfr and model# of these switch(s)?

Remove the switch(s) and directly connect the RBS to the RBR and test GN again.

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

Are the RBS wired to a switch or directly to the RBR?

IF there is a switch, what is the mfr and model# of the switch?

Please do a factory reset on the RBS AND RBR and setup from scratch. Press the reset button for 15 seconds then release.

Walk thru the setup wizard. I would directly wire the RBS to the RBR with out a switch.

Set the GN using the default SSID name first and don't use any security at first. Connect one or two devices near the RBS to the GN. Check the RBS web page with a different device thats connected to the main network and look at the connected devices on the RBS web page.

Test the connection.

What is the mfr and model# of your managed switch?

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

Hello

Thanks for your advices

I tried with and without the unmanaged network switch in between main unit and stellite so I guess this is not the issue. A single lan cable does not make a difference.

Factory reset seems the only option before returning everything to Netgear.

Orbi is replacing a 10 year old Time Capsule & Airport Express. I wish Apple had not discontinued their network devices...

What is the mfr and model# of this managed switch?

If this is a managed switch, go in and disble ALL IGMP protocols and any green ethernet features on this switch, then try testing again with it in between the RBR and RBS...this might help.

Just tried the same thing with direct wired connection to satellite without network switch. Same thing. Interesting that this only affects guest network and only if wired connection to satellite.

Lest try a facory reset on the RBR and RBS, 15 sec press and setup from scratch. Use same directy connection. Make sure the RBS is wired and showing wired on the status page on the RBR.

IF samething, I would make contact with NG support and have them look into this.

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

Dear all

I have some news after doing some test.

I think I have found what is causing this issue; this is a bug and I will ask the support team to get it fixed as soon as possible.

I have tried setting up with both IOS and Gui and the issue is the same.

Everythng workd until I changed the IP range of the main network; I changed it from 192.168.1.x to 10.0.1.x as it is on my previous set-up (Time Capsule + Airport Express) so that I do not need to modify some port manually.

As soon as you changed the IP range, router will reboot, you make sure that the satellite take the new IP (by rebooting it and unpluggin/pluggin the lan cable) on the new range and you see immediately the problem with no internet on the guest network through the satellite.

I have tried Sync too and it does not change anything.

@FURRYe38 what is your IP range ? Have you ever change it ?

The "funny" thing is that if you come back to 192.168.1.x it will not work. You need to go to reset factory and start from scratch, This looks very buggy.

May be if I could change the IP range of the guest network, it would work but this is not possible with the GUI.

Will report what support tells me.

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

Yes, I use 192.168.0.1.

So your saying when the RBR is changed to a 10.something address, the Guest network fails when your RBS are ethernet wired or wireless?

Before making the IP address change, Instead of disconnecting the ethernet cableing, just turn OFF the RBS fully. Make the RBR configuration change and apply and wait for it to come back to ready, then power ON the RBS.

Another idea would be to disable Guest Network first, then make the RBR IP address change, after all is ready, then re-enable Guest Network...

Re: AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satel

@FURRYe38

You wrote you are 192.168.0.1

The default one is 192.168.1.1 so it means you changed it ?

May be the bug is only when you changed the first 2 numbers ?

Your first idea

The RBS will synch each time when you power it on so it should not matter if you power it off or not when you change the IP range on the RBR.

Your second idea about doing the IP range change directly at the beggining after the factory resert with no Guest Network ON is an something I could try. It could possibly work... avoiding the bug! I have tried a few days ago removing the Guest Network and recreating that did not work. But I never tried changing IP range before creating the first guest netwok.

Support team tells me they will put me in contact with a specialist. I will wait for their feedback and make some test tomorrow again.

Hopefully they will fix it in a release soon.
